A Look Back At Some Of The Most Memorable Fashion And Beauty Moments From The Golden Globes
A retrospective ahead of this years' ceremony
Ahhh, the Golden Globes. They’re not quite a prestigious film soirée like the Oscars or the BAFTAs, or the celebrated TV event that is the Emmy’s. Instead the Golden Globes are a bit of a mash-up of the two, an evening to honour what is supposed to be the industry’s best efforts across film and television. However, the Globes has recently drawn considerable criticism over its perceived racism and lack of connection to the current cultural pulse. They’ve also been dubbed the wildest awards night on the calendar.
But one thing we can all agree on is that the Golden Globes red carpet has delivered some of the most iconic fashion and beauty moments in Hollywood history. So ahead of the 2021 Golden Globes ceremony – which is set to air at 8pm EST on February 28 – GRAZIA takes a look back at some of the most memorable looks to ever come out of the polarising awards show.
In one of the most memorable red carpet appearances of all time, we have a midriff-baring Cher in a printed two-piece, hoops and a fur coat, plus XXL hair and lashes. Oh, and Sonny was there too.
Gemma Chan looked elegant as always with this crisp red lip, fresh skin and perfectly pinned-back hair.
Who remembers when Cameron Diaz briefly went brunette? I think about it at least once per week. This tiered Valentino confection made the entire look a big moment for the actor.
Can we please take a moment for this absolute serve from Whoopi Goldberg circa 1991? I’d wear this to dinner tonight.
I’m going to be honest, this one is partially included because Heath Ledger was just out of shot. But Michelle Williams deserves props for this fresh, peachy beauty look with a relaxed up-do.
Mila Kunis‘ show-stopping emerald green Vera Wang gown landed her on all the best-dressed lists back in 2011.
A legendary pairing, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp. Another legendary pairing? Mary-jane heels and a sparkling mock-neck gown.
Bow down to Beyoncé wearing shimmering Elie Saab with bronzed, glowing makeup and perhaps the sleekest hair we’ve ever seen.
J-Law debuted her pixie crop right in the thick of awards season. She opted for shimmering silver shadow with a deep berry lip and fluttery lashes to accentuate the new cut.
Halle Berry is basically red carpet royalty at this point. This icy blue number with matching accessories only furthers her standing, really.
Here we have Madonna deep in her Ray of Light era when she was all about accent plaits in her hair.
Sienna Miller was a huge style star back in 2007, so it’s hardly surprising that this Dutch braided hairstyle generated copycats worldwide at the time.
Marilyn Monroe, the undisputed queen of glamour, rocked her exaggerated eyeliner, lashes and bouncy blonde bob back in 1961.
Lucy Boynton has become synonymous with her daring beauty looks, and this one from last year’s Globes would have to be one of her best. The brushed-up brows, the glitter, the double liner – perfection.
Zoë Kravitz has been slaying red carpets for years, but this would have to be a favourite of mine. Her neatly styled pixie with minimal eye makeup and a red lip stain – lo-fi glamour at it’s best.
This glittering Randolph Duke gown won Angelina Jolie numerous style accolades, as well as an actual Golden Globe later in the evening for her role in Gia.
Julia Roberts borrowed style cues from the boys with this masculine suit moment and honestly, she should break this one out again.
Lupita Nyong’o does colourful makeup better than anyone. This multi-hued purple look with glossy pink lips ticked all the boxes.
A wide-legged pantsuit, diamonds, hair twisted into an effortlessly undone up-do and Brad Pitt on one arm. Jennifer Aniston has truly lived out all our fantasies here.
The Globes seem to have been a kind of red carpet testing ground for young starlets flirting with a short-term pixie cut, as it once was for Natalie Portman. We love her thick lashes and liner too.
Janelle Monae always brings us the best fashion and beauty looks, but this up style, complete with mini pearls, is one for the books.
