Singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe always approaches fashion theatrically. She turns every red carpet into her stage, almost the female equivalent of what the magnificent Billy Porter is to red carpet fashion (the two actually sharing a fabulous moment on the gilt dais in their show-stopping gowns, with Monáe saying to him: “What you did last year and what you are doing now, I knew I had to come and I had to show up”).

In custom Ralph Lauren couture, Monáe’s style statement at today’s Oscars was again nothing short of spectacular. The silver beaded ball gown took a staggering 600 hours to construct and featured 168,000 Swarovski crystals, a sartorial feat to be applauded.

Covered-up but still innately sensual (with only a flash of skin via a peephole at the back) the custom gown also featured a beaded hood, the headpiece an integral part of Monáe’s personal style. It also paid homage to her love of structure and sculpture, beautifully fluted at its hem.

One of the Oscar’s best dressed, we can always trust Janelle Monáe to make an entrance – and in this spectacular sparkling Ralph Lauren number, this could be one of her best entrances yet.
