As 2021 comes to a close, social media platform Pinterest has come through with predictions of the hottest trends for the year to come. According to the website, last year “Pinterest Predicts” accurately forecasted 8 out of 10 trends for the year of 2021. From bright and bold hues, to sparkle and shine, the service seems to have joyous and opulent insights into the coming year. Calculating their most spiked searches, the platform recognizes that their most loyal users flock to the site to “plan for the future,” only solidifying the interpretation of what its search data might mean for 2022.
“Be Jeweled”
Searches for unconventional jewelry and blingy accessories skyrocketed on Pinterest this year. From tooth gems à la FKA Twigs and Beyoncé, to the search term, “Dermal piercing unique” having risen over 145% this year, I’m sure thanks, in part, to Lil Uzi Vert’s power move in February to embed a 10-carat pink diamond in his forehead. With crystal eye makeup in the vein of Euphoria, pedicures with rhinestones, and ear curation also having been buzzy searches in this year, we are sure to see eccentrically placed gems all over in 2022.
“Dopamine Dressing”
According to Pinterest, bright and bold is the way to go in 2022. Highlighter hues, color blocking and gradient prints seem to be all the rage for the forthcoming year. Of course, with every search term, a specific style moment from the past year comes to mind. For example, with “Rainbow Dress” doubling in searches, I think of any Christopher John Rogers moment, Ariana Grande recreating the 13 Going on 30 dress on The Voice, or Gal Gadot in a knitted Gabriela Hearst maxi dress. With “Electric Blue Outfit” surging, Megan Fox’s vivid cerulean two-piece set she rocked at Moschino’s NYFW runway show pops to mind, or her bold blue leather Miaou set. Basically, when it comes to your 2022 wardrobe, Pinterest says the brighter, the better.
“Hot Horology”
It seems as though Tiffany’s collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe could not have come at a better time. Watches are back and more beloved than ever, which makes sense as many more nostalgic fashions are simultaneously rushing back into our hearts. The terms “Trendy watches” and “Men’s Luxury Watches” both individually increased sixfold in 2021.
“Puff Love”
With many documenting their haircare journeys to maintaining their natural texture on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, they most definitely flocked to Pinterest for style inspiration. While predominantly Gen-Z driven, the data for the beauty trend expresses huge influxes for “High Puff Hairstyles,” “Short Natural Hair Styles,” “Natural Hair Bun Styles,” and “Space Buns Natural Hair,” all exceeding a 100% increase in searches.
“Oh My Goth”
As bubbly and princessy trends from the Y2K era come back with a vengeance, so too does the goth, punk, vampy rebellious style of the time. It really does all make sense- as resident hot girls Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox all have themselves some skinny tattooed bad boys. As the Depressive Demon Nightmare Boy replaces the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope, men like Pete Davidson, Machine Gun Kelly, and Travis Barker are considered the ones to catch. “Goth Business Casual,” “Goth Pajamas,” the unexpected “Goth Cowboy,” and possibly even more unexpected “Goth Baby Clothes” have all increased at least 70% in the last year. Now go chase your new goth boyfriend in your Prada Monolith Lug-Sole Combat boots.
“Rebel Cuts”
2022 will follow the lead of Rihanna and Miley Cyrus with mullets and pixies. Choppy and blunt, the edgy hairstyles sought on Pinterest this year ranged from “Short Hair Mohawk,” “Shaved Head Dye Designs,” “Octopus Haircut,” “Bob Cut Wigs,” and “Mullet hairstyle” with a whopping 190% increase.
“Nailscapes”
With a wide and abundant community of manicurists and nail artists posting their otherworldly designs across social media, Pinterest predicts that people will be painting deserts, geodes, constellations and other fantastical landscapes such as “Galaxy Nail Art,” “Aurora Nails,” “Ocean Nails Acrylic,” “Desert Nails,” and “Geode Nail Art” as they more they have more than doubled in searches, All sorts of universal creations will be at your fingertips, literally.
“Check Yourself”
Imagine the Vans Slip-On black and white checkerboard print..everywhere. Trending across interiors, menswear, and nail art, the pattern has saturated Pinterest’s design searches. With “Checkered Suit Men” increasing more than 95%, terms like “Checkerboard Pattern” and “Checkerboard Nails” have skyrocketed to well over a 160% increase.
“Lounge-erie”
With stay-at-home orders only recently lifting in the US and many still working from home, is it any wonder that loungewear lingerie would be trending? With celebrity brands like Skims and Savage X Fenty only gaining in popularity, terms like “Satin Nighty” and “Mens Pyjamas” more than doubling in searches, “Transparent Nightgowns” grew over five times its normal amount, “Silk Nightgown Aesthetic” grew over eight times its previous total, and the term “Lounge Lingerie” increased over 96 times its previous search figure. To say we’re confident we’ll be seeing quite a bit of “Lounge Lingerie” in the next year is a massive understatement.
“Pearlcore”
Mother of pearl! With the gemstone always having been an iconic and enduring staple for the ages in jewelry, now it is taking its everlasting popularity and spanning across party themes, home decor, and nail art. Rethinking tradition, search terms “Pearl Ring Simple” and even “Pearl Themed Party” have more than doubled, while “Pearl Gown” has tripled. With “Pearl Necklace Men” à la Harry Styles has increased seven-fold, the phrase “Pearl Wedding Decorations” has increased over 185%.
