Sadie Sink just made a major hair change. The 21-year-old Stranger Things star ditched her lustrous copper-toned wavy mermaid locks for a fresh new ‘do. The major chop was courtesy of hairstylist Tommy Buckett, and it was reportedly done for an upcoming new role.

In three different photos shared to Buckett’s Instagram, The Whale actress can be seen now sporting a shaggy, choppy mullet that looks like she stepped right out of the 1950 rockabilly era or the 1970s glam-rock period. In a new interview, Buckett revealed Sink provided inspiration photos, with references from the 1990s, highlighting an androgynous spirit, and photos of rockstars like David Bowie and Mick Jagger.

In the photos, Sink shows off her hair from three different angles while wearing a white Led Zeppelin band tee under an oversized black leather jacket.

Jane Fonda was known in the 1970s for cutting all of her hair off in Klute, and it was kind of a shaggy mullet, but I really liked the idea of ’90s reference to Winona Ryder in the front, where you can kind of flip it around and flop it back and it’s kind of like a cool longer pixie,” Buckett said.

More than an appropriate influence, Sink has worked with Ryder in Stranger Things since 2017, when she was cast as Max Mayfield in the second season of the smash hit Netflix science fiction series.

Barbie Ferreira, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Rihanna, Demi Lovato, Keke Palmer and more have all experimented with the mullet in the past. At the 2023 Met Gala, several celebrities debuted brand-new haircuts and Cara Delevingne stepped out with a fresh, icy silver shaggy mullet on the red carpet.

As for Sink’s trademark fiery hue? Buckett maintains he “would never” change the color of Sink’s hair. “I’ve had this conversation with her many times, like, ‘Whatever you do, don’t let anyone color your hair. You’ll never get it back,’” he said.

We’re placing our bets that this haircut is not for Max on Stranger Things. Looks like Sink has a new role in the works. Watch this space for updates.
