Personifying the quintessential relationship between designer and muse, Marc Jacobs and actress Winona Ryder have cultivated a fashion friendship for the ages. After partnering for many campaigns over the years, the designer tapped the Stranger Things actress to model the brand’s latest bag, where she perfectly channeled her signature Tim Burton goth-girl persona.

To celebrate the release of the new J Marc Shoulder, launching June 1, Ryder posed with the bag wearing wearing archival runway pieces, made of tulle, leather, and lace, plus the brand’s signature Kiki Boots. She also sported a hairstyle from her Girl, Interrupted days with a choppy pixie cut.

Featuring the brand’s signature interlocking “J” enclosure, the versatile leather purse can be carried as a clutch, crossbody, or shoulder bag. Available in various colorways, the J Marc Shoulder pulls inspiration from the brand’s early-aughts icon, the Stam bag.

Hardly the duo’s first rodeo, the brand teased its new campaign on Instagram last week with a carousel of iconic fashion moments between Ryder and Jacobs, to which the designer commented, “my Winona.”

The pair first worked together nearly 20 years ago, when Ryder was the face of Jacobs’ Spring 2003 ad campaign, photographed by Juergen Teller.

It followed the Beetlejuice actress’ 2002 trial, when she was found guilty of grand theft and felony vandalism after shoplifting over $5,000 worth of merchandise from the Beverly Hills location of Saks Fifth Avenue in December 2001 — including a $760 Marc Jacobs floral cashmere top.

She later wore a Marc Jacobs sweater dress from his Fall/Winter 2001 collection featuring a trompe l’oeil collar to the trial itself.

The pair would go on to attend the 2007 Met Gala with one another, celebrating “Poiret: King of Fashion.” Ryder later starred in the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2015 campaign along with fellow superstars Cher, Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis, and Willow Smith.

In 2015, Jacobs shared a photo of the campaign on Instagram writing, “Winona and I have been friends for over 15 years. She first appeared in our campaign in 2003. Here she is as beautiful and unique as ever photographed by David Sims in our Fall/Winter campaign.”

While the fashionable friendship may have kicked off with an unexpected start, Ryder and Jacobs have never failed to push boundaries. The two made headlines once again after Winona was named the face of Marc Jacobs Beauty’s 2016 campaign.

At the time, Jacobs wrote on Instagram that the campaign, “stars my dear friend (of over two and a half decades), the stunningly beautiful and extraordinarily talented, Winona Ryder. A brilliant mind, talent, and physical beauty like no other.”
