May 28, 2021: Demi Lovato took the stage at the 2021 iHeart Radio Music Awards last night for their first public performance since coming out as nonbinary and announcing that they are officially using they/them pronouns. Yet again, they’re rocking a brand new hairstyle worthy of all the headlines. This time, the 28-year-old has become the latest musician to commit to the ever-so-popular mullet.

Lovato paired their new hairstyle with their signature dramatic smoky eye (brought to life by makeup artist Rokael Lizama), a purple crushed velvet suit, and statement diamond jewelry. All in all, the look gave us major 1980s throwback vibes, and it was perfectly on-theme considering the hitmaker performed a tribute to the king of crushed velvet, Sir Elton John, alongside Brandi Carlisle and H.E.R.

Lovato’s mullet is closer to the style Jane Fonda wore in her infamous mugshot from 1970—a close crop with short bangs and piece-y, wavy hair with flipped-out ends. It’s flirty, it’s fun, it’s ultra-modern, and after the year Lovato’s had, they deserve to switch it up from time to time. Other mullets, like Miley Cyrus or Billie Eilish’s styles, are more of a “shullet” style—somewhere between a mullet and a shag—which is also super popular right now, too… for those who are big into the professional in the front, soirée in the back kind of vibes.

Lovato’s new cut and style was achieved by Lovato’s longtime stylist, César DeLeön Ramirez, whose clients also include  Ciara, Bebe Rexha, and Kylie Jenner, among others. The pro blessed his Instagram followers with images of Lovato in her red carpet outfit as well as her outfit for the Elton John tribute, which featured John’s signature oversized rhinestone sunglasses. Pure epicness.

Over the past year, Lovato’s been platinum blonde, a pixie dream, had a vintage throwback style, and more. It’s nearly impossible to keep it all straight. But growth and change are good, and a mullet? Well, that’s great for those who are massively indecisive and want a little bit of everything all rolled into one.
