Rihanna has made her triumphant return to the stage in the most poignant of fashions. On Sunday, the meg-watt superstar performed during the Apple Music Halftime Show at the 2023 Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona and made the moment memorable in so many ways. She took the opportunity to announce her second pregnancy on stage and paid tribute to her late friend, the legendary André Leon Talley through her outfit.

Rihanna wore a giant fire-engine red custom puffer coat by Alaïa, designed by creative director Pieter Mulier. It was reminiscent of the red Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat Talley often wore that became one of his signature pieces. Rihanna’s featured red leather with integrated gloves.

Talley passed away in January 2022 at the age of 73. The pair became friends over the years and Talley interviewed Rihanna on the Met Gala red carpet and often supported her theatrical Savage x Fenty presentations.

Talley’s official Instagram page commemorated Rihanna’s tribute with a video of the two embracing backstage at the 2019 Savage x Fenty Show. The caption reads,Living for Half Time – 🖤 @badgalriri 🏈 #superbowl.”

Talley’s estate also posted a photo of the late fashion journalist in his red Kamali coat with lyrics from the Grammy-winner’s hit song “Umbrella”, “When the sun shines, we’ll shine together. Told you I’ll be here forever… said I’ll always be your friend. @badgalriri 🎈”

Rihanna was styled by Jahleel Weaver, and wore a red bespoke breastplate and matching boiler suit by Loewe, along with a second shorter custom coat from Alaïa.

“I’m so excited to have been part of this unforgettable moment,” said Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson. “Rihanna is a true icon, and working with her to bring these stage looks to life feels like a wild, wonderful dream.”

The Anti artist teamed her ensemble with MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon trainers, three vintage diamond brooches from Joseph Saidian & Sons pinned to her jumpsuit, a Jacob & Co watch and dangling Messika diamond earrings.

The Oscar-nominee revealed her burgeoning baby bump as she performed her greatest hits including “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been?” “Work,” “Diamonds” and “Umbrella.” Rihanna and her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky are parents of a 9-month-old baby boy.

Talley’s personal collection is currently up for auction at Christies until Feb. 16 and features a treasure trove of his beautiful belongings including bespoke clothing, high jewelry, books, fine and decorative art, personal mementos and correspondences. Proceeds will go towards the churches that meant most to him, the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York and the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in his native Durham, North Carolina.
