Pieces from the personal collection of the late, great fashion editor André Leon Talley will go up for auction through a series of live and online sales at Christie’s, beginning Jan. 27 through Feb. 16.

A treasure trove of Talley’s beautiful belongings will be on sale including bespoke clothing, high jewelry and books, to fine and decorative art, personal mementos and correspondences, and proceeds will go towards the churches that meant most to him — the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York and the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in his native Durham, North Carolina.

According to the New York Times, Talley left a very clear directive in his will to auction off his prized possessions and to split the benefits between the two historically Black institutions of faith. “André was very, very specific,” the executor of his estate Alexis E. Thomas told the publication. “He left a very clear will.”

The collection includes standout pieces, like his monogrammed Louis Vuitton trunks, custom Tom Ford caftans, a Chanel navy silk faille tiered cape, a pair of Chanel Gripoix cuff bracelets and three pieces by his friend, artist Andy Warhol. These items reflect just some of the close-knit friendships he made throughout his life with designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Rucci, Diane von Furstenberg, Miuccia Prada and Tom Ford to name but a few.

“Andre Leon Talley was a fervent student of fashion, luxury, and French culture,” said Rachel Koffsky, the international head of handbags at Christie’s per Town & Country. “Not only do these trunks exemplify this, but they were also constant fixtures throughout his life. His collection developed as he developed within the fashion industry.”

Per the NYT, Christie’s expects the auction to exceed $702,000 in sales.

The estate sale comes one year after Talley’s death in January 2022 at the age of 73. He was a larger-than-life figure in fashion — and not just because he stood at 6’6” tall. The revolutionary editor was audacious and exuberant in his profound proclamations, defining artistry and fashion for over four decades.

From glamorous tales of industry milestones to vivid and vivacious descriptions of some of the most enduring designs, Talley’s transcendent knowledge and passion for fashion broke barriers throughout his life and career.
