Zendaya has won her first Golden Globe for her poignant portrayal as Rue Bennett in the HBO smash hit Euphoria. The star snagged the award for best performance by an actress in a television drama series at the 2023 Golden Globes on Tuesday night but was not in attendance to receive the honor.

Presenter Jay Ellis accepted the award on her behalf, telling the audience at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “She’s busy, she’s working y’all. It’s a good thing.”

Shortly thereafter, the actress took to Instagram to express her gratitude. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there tonight, but I just wanted to say thank you to @goldenglobes for this incredible honor,” she wrote alongside a shot of Rue dancing in a black-and-white pic.

“To my fellow nominees, it is a privilege to be named beside you, I admire you all deeply. Thank you to my Euphoria family, without you, none of this is possible. Lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has allowed Rue into theirs,” she continued. “I think everyone knows how much she means to me, but the fact that she can mean something to someone else is a gift. I’m honestly at a loss for words as I type this, all I can say is thank you thank you thank you. Goodnight♥️.”

Zendaya’s Euphoria costars Maude Apatow and Storm Reid took to the comments section to praise the actress. “CONGRATULATIONS ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” wrote Apatow. Reid added, “So proud of u.” Euphoria’s production company, A24 wrote, “We love you Rue ❤️.” There were more congratulatory messages from Selma Blair, designer Thebe Magugu, Bulgari, Yara Shahidi, Elsa Hosk, Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, model Adwoa Aboah and more.

Zendaya’s longtime stylist Law Roach posted a photo of them together on his own social media channel writing, “THAT GIRL….. @zendaya.”

Zendaya, a first-time nominee, was up alongside Emma D’Arcy for their role in House of the Dragon, Laura Linney in Ozark, Imelda Staunton for The Crown and Hilary Swank in Alaska Daily for the award.

Another win in the bag for Zendaya, the actress made history in 2020 when she won the Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series, becoming the youngest ever winner in the category and only the second Black woman to snag the trophy in the category, after Viola Davis. Zendaya took home the honor again this year at the 2022 Emmys for Euphoria’s second season, and broke more records as the youngest person of color to be nominated twice in the category.

On her Instagram Stories, Zendaya shared a close-up shot of Rue with a smirk on her face, commemorating the milestone. She also shared some other exciting awards season news.

The morning following the Globes, it was announced that Zendaya has been nominated for her Euphoria role again at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series.

Zendaya’s up against Jennifer Coolidge for The White Lotus, Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown and Julia Garner and Laura Linney for their performances in Ozark.

A big year for the acclaimed actress, Zendaya will star in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers film alongside West Side Story actor Mike Faist, and The Crown’s Josh O’Conner out this August, as well as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two alongside Timothée Chalamet and Florence Pugh, set for a November release.
