To say that HBO’s hit series Euphoria made an impact on beauty and makeup trends since its 2019 debut would be an understatement. Its influence has been colossal and continues to infiltrate the zeitgeist as we await the January release of season two. With intricate cloud designs, sticker decals, crazy colored eyeliner and most definitively, crystal-infused eye makeup decorating the faces of our most beloved and troubled teens, the ladies of Euphoria have inspired an unimaginable amount of experimental makeup tutorials spanning across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. With the recent release of the show’s season 2 trailer, GRAZIA explores Euphoria as a catalyst for one of our favorite beauty trends, face jewels as they continue to infiltrate runways and red carpets alike.

With Kristen Sage Coleman and Doniella Davy at the helm of Euphoria’s makeup department, Coleman took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup in 2020 for her work in the buzzy teen drama. As meticulously placed rhinestones mesmerize the audience, either skimming the brow or outlining an outrageous cat-eye, Euphoria’s makeup tells a story on top of its hypnotic appeal. Davy has taken to Instagram to breakdown her creative process stating, “I designed [Maddy’s] makeup to have a fantastical element to it because despite her fierce outward personality, Maddy is a diehard Romantic who wants to transcend the “loveless marriage” that is her home life.”

According to Pinterest, the trend will only gain traction in 2022, with the search term “crystal eye makeup” rising over 110% this year. The bedazzling adornment was seen all over the Met Gala red carpet this September, with Storm Reid, Julia Garner, Ella Emhoff, Maisie Williams, and Amanda Gorman all sporting the 3D trend. From the Met Ball to the Schiaparelli runway, rhinestones, crystals and pearls will continue to enhance our most elaborate beauty looks for the year to come.
