For all its glamour, the lifestyle that comes with fame isn’t always conducive to keeping the romantic spark alive—and 2023 proved this. Last year, amid strikes and scandals, we observed some of the biggest celebrity breakups we’d seen in a while. From Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, and Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez to Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas, it seemed the year was hellbent on dissolving the most secure-seaming bonds, leaving many romantics confused and discouraged. But if you thought love was safe in 2024, you thought wrong.
Capping off another year of Hollywood heartbreaks, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have reportedly called it quits after just a year of dating. The U.S. postart, 25, and the Irish actor, 32, who were first linked in December last year, are supposedly taking a break from their relationship, according to People magazine.
“They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break,” an insider told the outlet.
Just last month, the Saltburn star sang the singer’s praises during a radio show interview.
“I don’t know anyone who works as hard. I’m in awe watching her work and how committed, and the standards that she sets,” Keoghan said. “Especially being on that [Please Please Please] video, she just knows the vision. She knows what she wants.”
This news hurts, especially as Carpenter’s love life seemed to inspire some of the year’s best hits, but alas, we must move on. But they’re not the only duo joining the last-minute scramble for a midnight kiss this New Year’s Eve. In fact, some of our most hopeful couples didn’t quite see it to the end of the year.

Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck
This one really stung…
After months of speculation about the state of their relationship, Jennifer Lopez officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage, as per court documents registered on August 20, the two-year anniversary of their wedding. The records also show that their official date of separation was April 26, 2024.
Lopez and Affleck, or ‘Bennifer’ as they’re affectionately known, rekindled their romance in September 2021 after hard-launching their reunion through a PDA-filled walk in New York City. The pair initially dated two decades prior—a union that ended in the two calling off their engagement in 2004.
Zoë Kravitz & Channing Tatum
Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum were another ludicrously hot couple that called it quits this year, ending their engagement after three years of dating.
Though neither has made any public comments, multiple sources confirmed to People magazine in November that the couple broke up after a PDA-filled press tour for the premiere of Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice, which stars Tatum.
While many have wondered what could have caused the sudden split, reports suggest the two were in different places.
“They haven’t been on the same page and grew apart,” a source told People.
After wrapping up filming of Blink Twice, it’s also been speculated that where to live could’ve posed an issue. Kravitz is settled in New York City, while Tatum might have potentially preferred to be closer to his eleven-year-old daughter, Everly, whom he shares with ex Jenna Dewan, in Los Angeles.
Taylor Russell and Harry Styles
Celebrity breakups are common, but we thought these two would make it.
Harry Styles and Taylor Russell were shaping up to be Hollywood’s hottest new couple before news of a breakup began circulating.
As reported by The Sun, the couple broke up in April, just shy of a year of dating, following a ‘make or break’ trip to Japan. A source revealed to the British tabloid that their issues did not improve before they decided to part ways.
“Harry and Taylor have ended their relationship,” they said. “They went through a rough patch after their trip to Japan and are taking some time apart.”
The insider added that Styles and Russell had been dealing with distance.
“He’s been in America, and she’s been in London. They made a lovely couple, and it was obvious Taylor made Harry happy,” they continued. “Things have become strained recently, though, and they’ve taken some time out.”
Lupita Nyong’o & Joshua Jackson
After first being spotted together in October last year, Lupita Nyong’o and Joshua Jackson parted ways less than a year later, with Nyongo seemingly confirming the split during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK.
“My love for my cat is singular,” she told the publication. “If I’m ever so lucky to be in a romantic relationship again, it’ll be because of him. I was ready to shut that door and lock it and bolt it. He has ensured that my heart remains open.”
Madelyn Cline & Pete Davidson
According to the US Sun, Madelyn Cline and Pete Davidson‘s whirlwind romance simply fizzled out with no bad blood.
“They ended things fairly recently,” the inside told the outlet in July. “I understand it was amicable.”
The actress, 26, was first reported to be seeing the infamous Davidson, 30, back in September 2023, but both kept their relationship somewhat under wraps after a series of highly publicised relationships.
Quickly after rumours of their potential romance were making the rounds, Cline was seen attending Davidson’s Las Vegas stand-up comedy show. But it wasn’t until the next month that they confirmed their relationship with some PDA at a Saturday Night Live afterparty at New York City’s Catch Steak.
Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen
After 13 years of marriage, comedy sweethearts Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen announced they had jointly filed to end their marriage in a statement shared on Instagram Stories in April.
Alongside a photo of the couple posing in tennis costumes, the duo wrote that they were “finally putting our racquets down.”
“We forever share in our devotion and love for our children,” they wrote. “We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy.”
Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied
Despite an expansive career in Hollywood, Natalie Portman has typically kept her private life out of the spotlight. But when rumours that her husband of eleven years, Benjamin Millepied, had had an affair with climate change activist Camille Étienne, she was thrust into a publicity maelstrom.
“After news of his affair came out, they’ve been trying to work on their marriage but are currently on the outs,” an insider told US Weekly.
Then, in August, the May December actress was spotted in Sydney without her wedding ring despite it being her and Millepied’s wedding anniversary.
The couple shares two children and has not spoken publicly about their split.
