Every season, celebrities set the stage of what’s hot and what’s not in the beauty scene. This is done through makeup trends, skincare routines and, our personal favorite, hair colors. Now that fall is in full force, it’s about that time that celebrity hair chameleons start looking for the next new trend as we head into the cold winter months. Lucky for you, we caught up with the hair colorist to the stars to find out her hot hue prediction.

This past spring and summer we saw a new hair color take center stage. From strawberry blonde to deep copper, red was the hot new hue in Hollywood that had A-listers — including Sydney Sweeney, Barbie Ferreira, Sophie Turner and Kendall Jenner — shaking up their usual shades of blondes and browns.

Jenner was among the first to set the stage for the trend that blew up in 2022. The 26-year-old supermodel debuted her new red locks on the runway at Prada’s Milan Fashion Week show in late February — which fans are reliving through the latest season of The Kardashians streaming now on Hulu. Copper-colored hair continued to take social media by storm as Euphoria star Sweeney debuted her strawberry blonde locks on Instagram in March captioning her post, “so.. I did a thing 🍓.” The public was quick to support the actress hopping on the new hair color trend with one fan commenting, “Red is definitely your color! 🔥.”

The brains behind Jenner’s gorgeous red ‘do — and many other stars’ Instagram-worthy hair transformations including Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, Dua Lipa, Millie Bobby Brown, Karlie Kloss, Emily Ratajkowski and Maude Apatow — is celebrity hair colorist Jenna Perry. Perry specializes in “effortless, hot girl hair.” She is also the owner of Jenna Perry Hair salon in SoHo, New York City. The bayalage expert has become well-known across social media for her viral hair coloring work and setting each season’s hottest hair trends.

Aside from Perry’s long list of A-list clientele from New York to L.A., the Gemini hair guru also colors non-celebrity clients. “We have such a great clientele of very cool, creative women in New York City who I’m trying to highlight more,” Perry tells GRAZIA USA in an exclusive interview.

The down-to-earth, “It girl” colorist gave GRAZIA USA an inside look into the Jenna Perry Hair experience with our own color and cut treatment. We watched as salon-goers admired the fiery redhead hustling and bustling from client to client, always with a smile across her face. The sounds of old school R&B songs floated through the newly opened space as we were pampered by the beauty industry’s best.

The boutique salon prides itself on providing a personalized and tailored experience. “Myself and all of my colorists, we pay attention to detail,” Perry explains. “Whether it’s your lifestyle, your personal style, your skin tone, your hair color, your natural hair color, all of those kind of help us determine what hair color would be best on you.”

Perry’s service starts with a consultation to discuss the color each client is looking to achieve, paired with her expertise on what shades will suit them best. GRAZIA USA‘s shade of choice? The dramatic and *iconic* red hue that Perry has perfected.

After the color is chosen, Perry and her team mix up their formulas and get to work, starting with the roots and working their way down. In our case, Perry lifted my dirty blonde roots to lighten the color for the copper shade to hold. Once the color is set, clients are seated under heat for the color to activate and then it is time to rinse, wash and finalize the color.

In a matter of what seemed like minutes, the process is complete. We had expected a full head of foils and hours of color treatment, but instead what we got was a foil-free and wash-ready head of copper hair right before our eyes — a testament to Perry’s years of coloring skills. We finished up our hair transformation with a cut, curtain bangs and a blow out, which as you can guess, was nothing short of Hollywood glam.

Perry’s Hair Color Trend for Winter 2022

As we come out of the warm months, Perry believes people will start to go brighter and lighter as we move into the colder season. “I think that the girls that are blonde are definitely going to go for more of a full, very blonde look,” she exclusively shares as her prediction for this winter’s hottest hair color.

“Right now I feel like that more natural blonde color is really thriving,” Perry continues. “And I’m not sure if it’s the Barbie movie or the Marilyn Monroe [movie, Blonde], but I do feel blondes are really going to be even blonder [this winter].” Perry is dubbing the new season’s shade “Targaryen blonde.” “It hasn’t happened just yet, but it’s starting to happen!”

Actresses play a key role in leading the beauty industry, however, when it comes to popular hair colors Perry shares that the celebrities who tend to set these trends aren’t always making the color switch for the “trend” reason. “If they’re an actress, sometimes it’s solely maintaining something for a role or switching it up completely for a role.” From there, the public seems to follow suit, striving for these bold hair moves to become their own personal style as well.

A prime example of this is her celebrity client Chloë Sevigny. The award-winning actress is going “peroxide blonde” for her role in an upcoming Hitchcock film. For Sevigny specifically, the transition to bleach blonde isn’t as easy as it looks. She recently colored her hair dark and then back to blonde — done by Perry herself — which runs the risk of damaging the hair by further bleaching it. Because of this, Perry advised the actress to opt to wear a wig to protect her locks. “I highlighted her hairline to be very light so that the wig will appear more natural,” Perry adds. The blonde-haired role continues to follow the pattern of bleach blonde leads from some of this year’s most talked about films and television shows.

In addition to changing their looks for their career, Perry says that nostalgia plays a factor into the decision process. “A lot of times there’s a nostalgic, ‘Oh I loved when my hair was like this,’ from like a red carpet image.” This plays into the notion that beauty trends are a constant loop between the past and present. “And then a lot of times you’ll get a really random image from Pinterest” — proving celebrities are just like the rest of us, using social media in search of their next big beauty inspiration.

How to Achieve the Bright Blonde Hue Yourself

According to Perry, there are plenty of ways to achieve a celebrity-worthy hair color transformation at your own salon (if you don’t happen to live near Jenna Perry Hair in the Big Apple). “I think photos are the best thing to do,” Perry instructs when discussing how you too can get your desired hair color of choice.

“When you go to a hair salon, bring photo references of what you like and what you don’t like. If it’s the style of the color and the placement [you’re looking to achieve], make sure you’re very specific because as a colorist we really take the photos literally,” Perry explains. “Say [for example] you want golden blonde, sometimes your golden isn’t our golden and so photos speak words.” In this case, it especially rings true for the upcoming winter white. Perry’s recommended reference to achieve the popular Hollywood hue is the above photo of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Price Daemon Targaryen from HBO‘s House of the Dragon.

Of course not everyone can afford (financially and/or hair health-wise!) to bleach their hair to achieve Perry’s predicted Targaryen blonde. For those whose hair may not be ready to take the change, Perry also suggests an alternative: staying natural. “It’s so funny because as much as I like think I specialize in blondes, I have a lot of brunette clients and they love it [staying brunette]. I think it’s hard to get a brunette right because there’s so many red tones that pull that aren’t really wanted on specific skin tones.”

For her celebrity clientele who have recently gone darker against the coming bleach blonde trend, including Hadid and Kloss, Perry exclusively tells GRAZIA USA this is more about hair health than following a trend. “If you have bad highlights, these girls just tend to want to go back to their natural color,” she explains. “It’s easier, it’s less maintenance and it’s less damaging on their hair. Plus, they’re getting heat styled so often!”

What Can We Expect Next?

According to Perry, Bella Hadid is one celeb client of hers that we should all keep on our radar when it comes to hair coloring. “We chat and dream up ideas all the time when we’re together. She’s been really dark for awhile. She’s got these beautiful extensions by Jess [Jessica Gillin] that she’s really thriving with but we’ve definitely played with ideas of going back blonde or maybe like a really, really inky red!” Perry says. “But Bella, she’s always inspired so you never know. It’s always ‘What if?’ She keeps me on my toes!” Perry shares with a smile.

Whether Hadid’s next color of choice is a bold new trend or a continuation of her dark, natural reset, we know one thing is for sure: Jenna Perry Hair is the source behind the beauty industry’s next hot girl hair trend. Oh, and GRAZIA USA will definitely be watching for Targaryen blonde to takeover this winter!
