At the gym, there are those who are always on-the-go. You know the ones – highly motivated, test-drive every machine, and even know all the staff members by their first names. If you take a look at their workout routine, and that of high-level athletes, you’ll see they share some habits. Here are five habits that could help you boost your fitness everyday.

Embrace an Active Lifestyle

It may sound cliché, but what often makes a difference is simply leading an active life. All fit people incorporate regular exercise into their routine – it’s not something they just cross off their to-do list. If you find it hard to get into this rhythm initially, set clear goals until it becomes second nature. It’s all about taking the time to organize your week in advance and planning your workout sessions as you would a dentist or hair salon appointment. To get moving more every day, opt for tried-and-true methods: take the stairs over the elevator or bike instead of taking the train.

Set Clear Goals

Let’s face it, some days it’s harder to get motivated than others. Setting goals can help you sustain your efforts to stay in shape. For a pro, it might be trying to beat a new record. Your goals can be simple or complex, but they must be achievable and measurable – for instance, gradually trying to complete certain exercises. Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing can make it a lot easier to stay motivated.

Follow the 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 diet comes from the Pareto Principle, devised by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, which suggests that approximately 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. When applied to eating habits, the idea is to eat healthily 80% of the time and indulge for the remaining 20%. I.e., two “treat meals” per week. The goal? Eat healthily without creating a sense of deprivation.

Never Underestimate Recovery Time

In competitions like soccer championships, players often have a few days off before another game. Exercising every day is neither effective nor sustainable. Your body needs time to recover post workout. Resting should be part of your healthy habits. It gives your muscles a chance to rebuild.

Eat Balanced Meals

A healthy diet is key to staying fit, and physical activity requires an increased calorie intake. Make sure your meals are well-balanced and nutritious, including staples like grains and a reasonable amount of protein. Opt for whole foods, avoid processed ones and added sugars, and focus on nuts or dark chocolate instead. Furthermore, you can:

Drink plenty of water. Get adequate sleep. Manage your stress. Find a workout partner.
