The holy month of Ramadan brings many changes to our routines, and while the focus is on faith and self-improvement, many also worry about the impact on their skin. But what if we told you fasting could hold the key to a healthy, glowing complexion? As Dr. Gina Schoeman, Aesthetic Doctor at Creo Clinic explains, “As we embrace the holy month, it’s important to remember that while we are nurturing our spiritual health, our physical well-being, including the health of our skin, should not be overlooked. Fasting from dawn until sunset can significantly alter your hydration levels and diet, which in turn can affect your skin’s appearance and health.”

Here, GRAZIA looks into the connection between Ramadan and your skin. We’ll explore how the practice of fasting can influence hydration, detoxification and even cellular health, potentially leading to a radiant boost. We’ll also address potential challenges and offer tips on how to maintain a healthy skincare routine throughout the holy month, all thanks to top tips and recommendations from leading experts. So, get ready to discover how fasting might just be the secret weapon for a naturally beautiful and healthy glow. ✨

Fasting to banish breakouts

“Fasting promotes the body’s natural detoxification processes. By abstaining from food and drink for extended periods, the body begins to recycle damaged cells and eliminate toxins. This cleansing effect may contribute to clearer, healthier skin by reducing the accumulation of impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts,” explains Amanda Azzopardi, aesthetic nurse and founder of Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics.

This can also be linked to lesser quantities of break-out-causing foods being consumed, as Dr. Radmila Lukian, dermatologist and founder of Lucia Clinic, tells us, “Fasting may reduce the consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks, which are known to contribute to skin issues like acne. Additionally, fasting can enhance detoxification processes, indirectly benefiting skin health by reducing the burden of toxins.”

Fasting To Calm Inflammation

Fasting may be a surprising ally in your fight against skin inflammation. By reducing overall calorie intake and limiting processed foods, fasting can potentially lower inflammatory markers in the body. This translates to calmer, clearer skin, especially for those who struggle with acne or other inflammatory skin conditions. “It’s fascinating to note that many skin conditions, including psoriasis and acne, have an inflammatory component. Interestingly, some research has indicated that conditions like psoriasis may actually show signs of improvement during Ramadan among individuals who are fasting. This suggests that the anti-inflammatory benefits of fasting could play a role in the management of such skin conditions,”agrees  Dr. Gina.

“As individuals abstain from food and drink, their bodies undergo metabolic changes that can lead to stabilised blood sugar levels. This may help reduce the risk of skin issues like acne and eczema, which can be exacerbated by fluctuations in blood sugar,” explains Dr. Azzopardi. “The dietary modifications often associated with Ramadan fasting, such as increased consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along with reduced intake of processed foods and sugary snacks, can provide essential nutrients and antioxidants beneficial for skin health. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, such as vitamins C and E, help protect skin from oxidative stress and promote collagen production, leading to a more youthful complexion. Similarly, omega-3 fatty acids in foods like fish and nuts may help reduce inflammation and support skin barrier function.”

Fasting For Gut Health

During Ramadan, fasting can give your gut a much-needed break. This period of rest allows your digestive system to focus on repair and the microbiome, the community of good bacteria in your gut, can flourish. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to reduced inflammation throughout the body, which can have a positive impact on your skin. This translates to a calmer complexion, potentially reducing blemishes and promoting overall radiance. As Dr. Gina explains, “Intermittent fasting, such as the practice observed during Ramadan, can enhance the body’s resilience against oxidative stress. This increased defence is instrumental in shielding the skin from premature ageing and the detrimental effects of environmental factors. Furthermore, there’s an emerging consensus on the gut-skin connection, indicating that a well-balanced gut microbiome is crucial for maintaining healthy skin.”

TOP TIPS

To ensure that your skin remains vibrant and healthy during Ramadan, here are some of Dr. Gina’s top tips to get you started:

*Hydration is Key*: Even though your water intake is limited during the day, make sure to drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor to maintain your skin’s hydration. Dehydration can lead to dry and dull-looking skin, so it’s crucial to replenish your body’s water supply whenever possible.

*Balanced Diet*: Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into your meals. They are not only essential for overall health but also provide the vitamins and antioxidants that your skin needs to stay radiant.

*Mindful Skincare Routine*: Stick to a gentle skincare routine. Use a mild cleanser and a hydrating moisturiser to keep your skin clean and moisturised. Avoid heavy makeup that can clog pores, especially when your skin might be more prone to dehydration.

*Stay Protected*: If you are outside during daylight hours, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

*Rest and Rejuvenate*: Ensure you’re getting enough sleep during the night hours. Sleep is a time for your body, including your skin, to repair and rejuvenate.
