The 90s blow dry has been en vogue amongst the celebrity style set for a few seasons now (CC: Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez) but it hasn’t completely broken through to the masses just yet. While some have flirted with creating a rounder shape to their everyday style – this writer included – the amplified blown-out volume and body that characterised the look in its hey-day hadn’t quite made a full-bodied comeback.
Until now that is, as TikTok has officially declared the bodacious blow dry – à la It Girl of the era, Cindy Crawford – to be a viral trend. Creators on the platform have become enamoured with the supermodel’s iconic hair looks from the early to mid 90s, seeking to replicate her bombshell rounded waves and honeyed highlights.
Crawford’s signature style was infamous throughout her career and in many ways laid the foundation for the ‘rich girl’ hair aesthetic we all covet today. Her locks were always perfectly coiffed, with plenty of height at the crown that then cascaded into voluminous, softly curled lengths with an inward curvature at the ends.
Her brunette tresses also shone with expensive-looking caramel highlights strategically scattered around her face, a technique that brightens the complexion and has resurfaced recently within the locks of fellow supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
TikTok creators have been going to some lengths to emulate Crawford’s iconic tresses, with user discoprincess420 even colouring and cutting her own hair in reference to a throwback photo of Crawford. First she sectioned and spliced highlights through the front sections of her hair, before cutting layers and curtain bangs around her face.
Then, using a thick round barrel brush to blow dry, she placed sections of her hair into hot rollers to set into Crawford’s rounded shape. The end result was a dead ringer for that infamous bombshell bounce. The video promptly went viral, racking up more than 2 million likes as viewers gushed over the DIY cut and dye job.

Another user, hairbyvanessaocando, took a less drastic approach, which is perfect for those less inclined to experiment with their own hair colour or cut at home. She used a thick curling iron to create a bouncy 90s-inspired style, which leaves far less room for error and requires much less commitment.

While doing it all DIY poses a little too much risk for our liking – save it for the salon perhaps? – the styling is something we’ll definitely be trying ASAP.
