May 25, 2021: Thanks to TikTok, Gen Z fashion is a hot topic of conversation. If you’re on the popular social media platform, you’ve likely experienced the following phenomenon firsthand. Users of the social media platform create fashion communities hashtagging their respective “core,” er, aesthetic. It all started with normcore, categorized by Y2K fashion, chunky sneakers, and cuffed loose-fitted jeans. Then, along came cottagecore (think Anya Taylor-Joy in Emma), celebrated by everyone, including celebrities and regular people alike, with an influx of vintage lace, wide-brim hats, gingham, and romantic VSCO filters.

There’s pretty much a “core” aesthetic for every style, no matter how niche it may be (do we even have to explain clowncore?) The newest aesthetic we’re seeing arise is a preppy sport look, which justly deserves to be called “Tenniscore.” With Wimbledon and the 2021 U.S. Open rapidly approaching, the timing of the trend is perfect—but let’s clarify that being a professional athlete (or someone who exercises at all, really) isn’t necessary to embrace the aesthetic. It’s synonymous with the athleisure one would typically wear on the court, whether you’re on the court or not.. Think pleated skirts, polos, and matching skort sets.

Although the Tenniscore aesthetic can be functional (see: Venus Williams), more often than not, we see the trend worn off the court as everyday wear. Kendall Jenner’s made a strong case for sporting Alo Yoga’s take on the style for a day out with friends last week, pairing the celeb-loved athleisure brand’s Airbrush Real Bra Tank in GreenApple with the matching Aces Tennis Skirt. Likewise, Naomi Osaka just launched a collab with Frankies Bikinis that gives us serious fresh-off-the-tennis-court vibes. See the Osaka Terry One-Piece Swimsuit and the Ellie Terry Halter Bikini Top to understand what we mean when we say, Tenniscore.

If you’re looking to serve up some Tenniscore looks this spring and summer, we recommend opting for a monochromatic look, preferably in neutral or bright tones. A pleated A-line skirt with a cropped polo or fitted tank top will surely get the job done. Round out the look with a pair of white sneakers and tall socks, and then you’re ready to take on a match (or not, your call).
