In delightfully unexpected news, Rihanna has reclaimed her status as hair chameleon extraordinaire after debuting a surprisingly cropped cut during a business meeting in Santa Monica. (See the look for yourself here!) Stepping out in the beach-side Los Angeles neighbourhood, the musician and beauty industry disrupter eschewed her recently-preferred long brunette tresses for a style similar to her late noughts, early 2010s face-framing pixie cut.
Updating the style for her new maternal era, the mother-of-two looked to a shaggier shape synonymous with the mullet trend popular in 2021. (A look she famously pioneered ahead of its time during the pandemic.) Given the fact the haircut fell out of public favour after it became synonymous with the ‘Fitzroy Garage Sesh’ larrikins, Rihanna’s return to her roots could signal a shift in the zeitgeist. Will it dethrone the bob as the favoured crop amongst A-listers? Only time will tell, but if there’s one beauty savant who could plead its case, it’s Rihanna.
The songstress sported another signature look for the outing: athleisure-adjacent luxury fashion. She paired her trimmed honey-hued hair with camouflage printed sportif sunglasses from Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta denim jeans (presumably borrowed from her rapper beau, A$AP Rocky), Alaïa’s latest ‘It’ Le Teckel shoulder bag, a tweed Gucci cardigan with brooch detailing and the Italian luxuriate’s coveted ‘GG’ slingbacks with encrusted crystal motifs.
Her excursion marks the first time she’s been seen out in public since arriving back in the US after her reported multi-million-dollar performance at the pre-wedding ceremony for the son of India’s richest man. It’s not apparent what has spurred the sudden change in appearance, but after a slew of recession-proof updates from the celebrity style set we’re welcoming any bold change.
