High on the list of unexpected things to happen in 2020, alongside a global pandemic and Christmas being cancelled, is the mullet making a return to the spotlight.

Miley Cyrus – naturally – kicked off the trend back in January and instead of the style being just another quirky moment from the musician (read: Miley being Miley), Cyrus surprisingly hit a nerve. Quickly, the likes of Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and Euphoria’s  Barbie Ferreira and Jacob Elordi followed suit, before Australian musician Troye Sivan got a mullet of his own, and even Zac Efron, who’s currently living Down Under in Byron Bay, tried out a mini mullet.

Of course, all of the above is enough to call a trend a trend, but not enough to move the mullet totally into the mainstream (sorry Efron, you just don’t have that much clout). But that’s where Rihanna, clout queen, comes in.

Back in October, the singer-slash-designer-slash-beauty-mogul sent a slew of models, including Cara Delevingne, down her Savage x Fenty runway with full-fledged mullets. And now, just two months later, she appears to have adopted the style herself.

Based in Barbados for the holidays, the 32-year-old has since been spotted by fans on several occasions sporting her new hairstyle, before she confirmed her new look by posting images in a festive cherry bikini – complete with tiny red Chanel bags, for good measure.

Rihanna is, of course, one of the most stylish women in the world, so for her to endorse the controversial hairstyle means just one thing: it’s here to stay. Now it’s only a matter of time before more and more celebrities take the plunge.

Time to place bets on who’s next to debut the look on the ‘gram, my guess is Bella Hadid.

I never thought I’d say the words, but… do I want a mullet?!
