The musician’s preceding appearance at a Dior fashion show was one marked by surprise and unparalleled fanfare. The then-pregnant singer’s baring of her baby bump in a black babydoll négligée commenced a sartorial revolution. A maternity dressing redux, if you will.
Now, next to Natalie Portman in the Musée Rodin, Rihanna is once again offering a masterclass in style. Her lesson? The fundamentals of postpartum dressing. The cardinal rule? Eschew convention in Dior couture.
Without a hint of warning, Rihanna has appeared in the antithesis of her previous lingerie-inspired ensemble. The flourish and pageantry remain the same, yet the silhouette pays homage to Dior’s house codes. Those conjured by Monsieur Dior himself.
In a subtle nod to the theatrics and inflated ideals that underpin today’s fashion zeitgeist, Rihanna has opted for an aerated spin on Dior’s new look. A fresh style for the modern mother, indeed. The Fenty Beauty founder selected an avant-garde interpretation of Dior’s signature Bar Jacket. The black silk taffeta jacket cinched at her waist and featured an exaggerated lapel that subtly swathed her shoulders to expose the slightest slither of skin. The mother-of-two paired the jacket with a calf-grazing midi skirt comprised of the same fabrication.
On her arm, the luxuriates Lady Dior purse. (With the ‘R’ charm resting atop the bag). She completed her outfit with a pair of white stilettos, two dainty diamond anklets and an asymmetrical hat.
While we were proverbially star-struck by Rihanna’s unexpected return, it appears that the mother-of-two was equally enthralled by her contemporaries on the front row. Namely, Natalie Portman. As captured by peering videographers, Rihanna could be heard telling the May December star, “You are one of the hottest b*tches in Hollywood forever.”
“You do the most innocent look and I’m like ugh,” Rihanna added before turning to the paparazzi and asking, “Can someone please take a picture so I can remember this happened tomorrow.” We hope Maria Grazia Chiuri frames the shot for her desk.
