Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” Music Video, 2022 (Columbia Records)

New music from Miley Cyrus is here — and it’s good. The singer released the single “Flowers,” from her upcoming eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, at midnight (London time) on Jan. 13, which just so happened to coincide with her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday

The music video (directed by Jacob Bixenman) starts with Cyrus strutting along the street in sunny L.A., wearing a hooded gold lamé dress with a diagonal torso cutout from Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall/Winter 1991 collection, styled by Bradley Kenneth.

Walking across a bridge, Cyrus sings the lyrics, “We were right, ‘til we weren’t. Built a home and watched it burn,” likely referencing the 2018 Woolsey fire that ignited Southern California in 2018 and destroyed Cyrus and Hemsworth’s Malibu home.

An ode to self-love, Cyrus sings, “I can buy myself flowers. Write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours, see things you don’t understand. I can take myself dancing, and I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

The video cuts to Cyrus in a backyard as she slips out of her vintage YSL gown and takes a dive into the pool in her black lace bra and underwear. Then, the “Bangerz” artist works out in her panties, before hopping in the shower. With her damp bleach blonde hair slicked back, Cyrus picks out a strong power suit, courtesy of Saint Laurent, and dances the night away and sings to the empowering song.

After their on-and-off romance through the years, Cyrus married Hemsworth in December 2018, then finalized their divorce in January 2020. Cyrus has written about their relationship multiple times over the years, giving fans an inside perspective on their dynamic, from the highs (“Malibu”) to the lows (“Wrecking Ball”). Hemsworth has now been romantically linked to model Gabriella Brooks for the last three years while Cyrus has been dating drummer Maxx Morando for over a year.

Miley announced the release date for “Flowers” during her NBC NYE Special, Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, where she sported a curated vintage wardrobe filled with blasts from the past styles, perfectly encompassing her quintessential glam rock flair, from designers like Bob Mackie, Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace and more.

Last week, Cyrus shared the cover art and release date for Endless Summer Vacation, (out March 10) and continued the archival fashion extravaganza.

In the photo, she holds onto a horizontal pole against a clear blue sky wearing a black halter-neck vintage Azzedine Alaïa bodysuit with side cutouts, Saint Laurent slingback heels and narrow, angular black sunglasses, styled by Bradley Kenneth. Cyrus wore her bleach blonde tresses in wispy waves with a statement red lip.
