Anitta cemented her pop star status on Sunday evening, with multiple award-worthy style moments and her very first American Music Award for favorite female Latin artist at the 2022 AMAs. Styled by Ron Hartleben, the Brazilian singer made her debut red carpet appearance at the event in custom Mugler designed by creative director Casey Cadwallader.

The body-hugging mermaid gown featured a sequined white long-sleeved top, an illusion midriff cutout, and a glittering black skirt showcasing two butt-baring cutouts. The cheeky ensemble was created in homage to Brazilian icon Carmen Miranda, according to Hartleben. The performer teamed her look with Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings, Elsa Peretti cuffs and an assortment of dazzling diamond rings.

During the awards ceremony, Anitta took over the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with a smash performance of her international hit “Envolver” in a sleek black velvet catsuit and a vintage Gucci belt, from Tom Ford’s Fall/Winter 1995 collection sourced from Tab Vintage. The artist tapped her “Lobby” collaborator Missy Elliott for a surprise appearance, drenched in Versace.

Anitta accepted her first AMA in a legendary vintage breastplate that’s gone down in fashion history. Designed by experimental provocateur of fashion, Japanese designer Issey Miyake showcased his subversive exploration and examination of the relationship between clothes and the body with his Fall/Winter 1980 collection. Adored by the likes of the Grace Jones, Miyake’s futuristic metallic acrylic bustier continues to be a benchmark in the history of body molds in fashion.

The bronze breastplate was sourced from Pechuga Vintage, and teamed with a white mermaid, fishtail skirt and Tiffany & Co. jewels, including an Elsa Peretti Claw Necklace, stacked silver Elsa Peretti cuffs and a 6-carat diamond ring.

Hartleben, Anitta’s stylist took to Instagram to commemorate the landmark fashion moment. “I don’t have a caption! I can’t believe this happened! @anitta in the iconic Issey Miyake breastplate last night styled by me,” he wrote. “Thanks to my amiga @pechuga_vintage 🧜🏽‍♀️.”

The vintage retailer took to Instagram as well, writing, “What a moment to be a part of.” Pechuga Vintage continued, “If the late Issey Miyake created this acrylic bustier to study the relationship of unconventional materials with the body, I collect to study the relationship of fashion items with culture.”

Anitta follows the likes of Olivia Wilde and Sydney Sweeney who have opted for the sculpted silhouette. From ancient armor to subversive sartorial statement, the juxtaposition of the breastplate’s innate masculinity, melded with an exaggeration of the female form has captured the curiosity of fashion’s most prolific creatives.
