For a while now we’ve become accustomed with Katy Perry‘s platinum blonde locks. While the “Teenage Dream” artist is known for her quick transition between a choppy pixie cut and long brunette hair and sweeping curtain bangs, it felt like 2010 all over again when Perry debuted jet black strands for the season finale of American Idol.

Behind the tresses of Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Shay Mitchell, the dramatic transformation was thanks to Jesus Guerrero. According to the celebrity hair stylist, he used OGXBeauty Shine Mist to achieve the dead-straight finish. Perry wore a daring red and glitter jumpsuit from Alexander McQueen – the ensemble was the brain child of Tatiana Waterford.

The sleek hair is reminiscent of Perry’s early days of music sans the pin-up curls for a modernised iteration. At the 2021 Grammy Awards, Dua Lipa wore a similar hair look with sweeping extensions. If you’ve struggled with volume in the past, fear not: flat hair is back.

While we imagine this is a very well-placed wig, there are several considerations for such a big change in real life.

“A great way of finding out if cooler or warmer tones suit you is with your wardrobe at home,” hair stylist Alex Newman, Mackellar’s co-founder at Studio Meta previously told GRAZIA. “If you can wear orange, yellows, or vibrant reds you are more likely to be a skin tone that suits brunettes with honey, auburn and cherry undertone. If grey, blues, purples and magenta are more your thing, brunette hues with velvety ash, violet, mahogany undertones will suit you better.”

After 2020 spent indoors, it seems a hair refresh is a must for many celebrities. Billie Eilish famously went from black and neon green to a fresh blonde look while Selena Gomez did the same (it took eight hours and over 200 foils). Just last week Phoebe Dynevor opted for a fiery red colour – an update to her strawberry blonde locks.

As for Perry, will we see a more permanent fixture of brunette? We’re here for it.
