If there’s one thing red carpet beauty reveals, it’s that your hairstyle can be a secret weapon when pulling together a look. Something that might surprise you is how commonplace hair extensions are for people in the limelight, even off the red carpet. That’s because, when done well, they’re hard to spot. Instagram evidence from hair extension professionals like Priscilla Valles reveals that extensions can range between dramatic and subtle. It’s the difference between Kylie Jenner’s long locks, Hailey Bieber‘s extra inches, Simi Khadras silky straight hair, and many more styles (pictured below).

“There are so many different ranges of colours and quality types (of hair extensions) that make a massive difference to the customer,” Youmna Khouri shared in an exclusive interview with GRAZIA. Khouri is the founder and CEO of Youmi Beauty, which specialises in creating products for the ‘fierce women of the Arab world.’ This beauty expert dedicated two years of extensive research to finding the pitch perfect hair extensions for her customers and is our go-to for advice on hair extensions. If you’ve ever been tempted to try out the thick, lustrous hair seen on models and celebrities during award shows and red carpet walks, then here are the things she shared with us that you should consider first.

3 things to know before buying hair extensions

Youmna Khouri: “For those looking to get hair extensions, I suggest choosing the right colours beforehand and seeing them in person. This is because otherwise, the colour difference may show a clear divide between your hair and the extensions, which would look highly unnatural. Another thing would be to research which type of extension is most suitable…

…Youmi Beauty offers a couple of different types, including tape-in and clip-in. Tape-in extensions are ideal for daily wear, whereas clip-in extensions are good for more temporary situations, as you can take them out for showering, sleeping etc. Finally, people should know that hair extensions must be looked after and maintained well. Although Youmi Beauty extensions are very high quality, they still need to be cleaned, kept out of chlorinated water, protected from the sun, and used with soft bristle brushes.”

Top tip for extensions Maintenance

YK: “The top tip I give my customers is always to be gentle with the hair extensions and use hair products to keep them moisturized, just like you would with your own hair. The extensions should be applied professionally as the hair specialists will know how to apply them correctly to make them longer lasting. It is also important to leave the extensions in for less than two months and never go to bed with wet or tangled hair, as this causes them to get damaged.”
