It’s a scene we’ve all seen play out before: Your ex seemingly head-over-heels in love with their new partner while you begrudgingly oscillate between pondering ‘How could they move on so quick’ and ‘Why can’t that happen to me’? This was the trope until 2014, when Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their separation in a very goopy way, giving the zeitgeist a new language for navigating breakups and life after love.

A decade later, it appears that “co-parenting”—a term to describe a divorced or separated couple’s continuation of joint child rearing, despite no longer being together—is the principle to aspire to. In a recent profile, Jodie Turner-Smith opened up about her recent split from Dawson’s Creek alumni Joshua Jackson, becoming the latest celebrity in a legion of A-listers to explain their hopes for healthy co-parenting despite their separations.

For the uninitiated, Turner-Smith and Jackon divorced in October 2023 after three years of marriage. Jackson was quickly spotted on several dates with Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o. The pair soft-launched their relationship grocery shopping at Erewhon after news of their romance broke while on holiday in Mexico. But rather than Turner-Smith being bitter about the situation, the 37-year-old instead had a very gracious response.

“Good for them,” she replied when asked about what it was like to see her ex date another high-profile actress only two months later. “We need happiness in order to peacefully co-parent,” she added. “I’m trying to get us to the Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Chris Martin level. I truly hope they’re happy and that it benefits us as a family.”

Recent divorcée, Sophie Turner, echoed the sentiment in a recent cover story, explaining that she and her ex-husband Joe Jonas are working towards a similar path following their volatile and highly-publiced split and subsequent custody battle. “My dream is to have a huge Christmas where my daughters can have their dad there, Joe’s whole side of the family, their grandparents,” she said to British Vogue before adding, “I don’t care about the politics, I just want the girls to feel loved and have everyone show up for them.”

A notion Turner-Smith vehemently resonates with: “I just have to do everything that I can to set Juno up to win and to peacefully co-parent with someone whom I once loved very, very much”. Turner-Smith will soon appear alongside Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Very much the title of the last eight months of her life, indeed.
