The warm weather—not currently present in Sydney, sadly—often injects high-octane colours and flirty hemline lengths into our summer ensembles. This balmy colour palette typically ranges from popsicle pinks to limoncello yellow.

Yet this season, a more inconspicuous hue is coming to the fold—one reminiscent of plaid shirt days, autumnal leaves and Bloomingdale bags. Indeed, the muted shade of brown has become the shade du jour, with “latte dressing” the current variant of stealth wealth taking over the closets of the celebrity style set.

A sartorial deviation of the popular bronze-inspired beauty trend, latte dressing is a form of mocha-coloured blocking that injects a caffeinated perk into otherwise timeless silhouettes.

Hailey Bieber, Meghan Markle and Rihanna have all been seen to incorporate this austere tonal attire into their otherwise vibrant wardrobes, making a serious case for shades of brown to be considered as a year-long hue. (As opposed to being a cornerstone of cold days, as it is currently regarded). The latest to give ‘latte dressing’ her tick of approval is Jennifer Lawrence.

After her wardrobe malfunction earlier this week, it seems that the actress has found a style she can cling to (unlike that Dior belt of hers). While strolling the streets of Manhattan the No Hard Feelings star put on a masterful display of under-the-radar elegance.

Continuing her quiet luxury reign, the mother of one wore a canary yellow oversized turtleneck from Tory Burch, white denim jeans, oversized 70s style sunglasses from Stella McCartney and ecru Adidas sambas. Over the top of her outfit, the actress layered Toteme’s slouchy Annecy coat—a beloved staple of fellow stylish Manhattanites like Katie Holmes.

As Lawrence is making apparent, layering yourself in sumptuous shades of rich brown is an underrated styling trick to elevating any wardrobe fundamental. Of course, the look is missing the ultimate “latte dressing” accessory: an iced coffee served in a chic flat lid cup à la an on-the-go Olsen Twin.
