For the majority of us, the notion of standing in front of hundreds of people to only suffer a wardrobe malfunction is the stuff of nightmares. It’s a thought that wakes us up in the middle of the night and leaves us in a cold sweat with the hope that we will never undergo this fate. Ever.
But for Jennifer Lawrence, this public calamity just became a reality. Overnight in New York, the 33-year-old actress attended the Dior Carousel of Dreams at Saks opening on Fifth Avenue.
The Dior ambassador (and recent proponent of The Row’s quiet luxury aesthetic) did so in a sleek monochromatic ensemble from the French Maison’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. Her look featured an autumnal longline coat, crisp white button-up shirt and a sheer, pleated skirt—all fixed together by one ultra-cinching belt.
Things were going well for Lawrence. Her blonde hair, tucked perfectly behind her ears with a black headband, shined with enviable sun-kissed “rich girl” qualities. Her megawatt smile rivalled the legion of LED lights that lined the famed department store in a whimsical, empyrean-esque motif.
That was until the mother of one stepped up to the podium to issue her address.
Just as Lawrence began to acknowledge the light display, she put on a spectacle of her own by accidentally popping her belt off. It appears that the surprising force of Lawrence raising her hands in appreciation caused the buckle-style belt to come undone.

Given that this is one of the greatest comedic actresses we’re talking about, Lawrence played off the moment with her signature relatable charm. The actress immediately covered her mouth with her hands and let out an awkward giggle before carrying on with her speech through stifled laughter.
For those who didn’t manage to see the belt fly off Lawrence’s body, like Dior’s CEO Delphine Arnault, it appeared that Lawrence was just overwhelmed by a bout of gratefulness or stage fright.
But thanks to the horde of camera phones recording the moment, Lawrence has the distinct privilege of reliving this slightly humiliating moment in all its pixelated glory.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Lawrence has suffered from a slight public wardrobe malfunction—and at the hands of Dior. If you’ll recall, the actress struggled to get up the stars at the 2013 Academy Awards to accept the Oscar for “Best Actress”.
The train of her Raf Simons-designed gown proved to be too cumbersome for the actress to get up the stairs, with the star joking in her acceptance speech that her Hollywood contemporaries were “just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and that’s really embarrassing!”
Lawrence seemingly learnt that lesson the hard way and resolved to only wear flats on red carpets moving forward. See: her flip-flops at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Could belts be barred from Lawrence’s sartorial repertoire moving forward? Much like the accessory, we won’t be holding on to find out.
