Historically, boots have been among the most boring purchases a person can make. They’re just so… practical—and they’re expensive, making them one of those unsexy ‘pragmatism-over-style’ investments. But this wasn’t the case this season. Brands like Bottega Veneta, Chanel, and Jil Sander are paving the way for The Boot 2.0, creations so playful and eclectic that you’ll be falling over yourself to get your feet into a pair.

So, what’s so different about these new-season styles? They all favour the below-the-knee length, an equestrian-adjacent style, first popularised back in the ’80s. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen Instagram It-girls à la Emili Sindlev, Veronika Heilbrunner and Giorgia Tordini embrace the look, be it Sindlev’s lug soled rubber gumboots, Tordini’s slouchy patent leather stilettos, or Heilbrunner’s sensible flat black riding boots.

The best thing about this trend is how damn versatile these boots are—the mid-length suits a whole range of aesthetics. Tucked into straight-leg denim—and paired with a good white T-shirt and a perfectly tailored blazer—will add an edge to your usual weekend errand-running ensemble. Or they can be paired with a knee-skimming skirt and silk pussybow blouse, for maximum neo-bourgeoise impact. Or, you can go full sex appeal: with a thigh-skimming cocktail dress and chandelier earrings.

Plus—at the very least—they’ll look truly fabulous on Instagram, especially in a bold hue, like Paris Texas’ red hot creations, or a wild print, like the zebra and crocodile prints popularised by Instagram-favourite labels like By Far and Madga Butrym. Whichever your personal style proclivity, there’s a pair out there for you—here, we round-up four of our favourites.
