Whether we are escaping the mundanity of our restricted lives or the messiness of our social media feeds, a woman’s night time routine has become a much-needed tool to disconnect and relax. In a new series “How I Wind Down…”, we speak to lot of different women about how they prepare for a restful evening.

On June 7, Frank Body co-founders Bree Johnson and Jess Hatzis celebrated the brand’s eighth anniversary. In just under a decade the women have impressively sold almost 10 million coffee scrubs, with a product now selling every 10 seconds. For the women, the business began as means to pay rent. From humble caffeinated beginnings the self care start up has grown to offer more than 40 face, body and hair products in over 156 countries.

It’s not hard to see why women (and trendy men) have fallen in love with the brand. It’s mostly vegan, cruelty free and Australian made. And the coffee scrub (the whipped iteration being our favourite) will make you instantly feel reborn.

“It feels like silk and it glows like you’ve been at a day spa,” Johnson told GRAZIA. “No other product I’ve tried has ever given me the same instant results. We’re also very strict on our ingredient philosophy, the ingredients aren’t complicated but they are all great for your skin and the earth. There’s no fillers, parabens, phlates, PEGs or anything you wouldn’t want washed down the drain, like microbeads. Also, we test our products on my very sensitive skin when we are formulating, meaning we create products that every person can use.”

With such a broad offering (featuring a new line of serums) it’s easy to get overwhelmed. In the latest instalment of How I Wind Down we tapped the successful entrepreneurs for their own self care routine and how they use their favourite products in line with their nighttime routines.

GRAZIA: Can you describe your night time beauty routine?
“I would describe my night time routine as simple but effective. I like to use active products that do the heavy lifting for me. I have very dry, sensitive skin so a lot of my routine is centred around hydration. Firstly I cleanse. I’ve been using our Anti-Makeup Cleansing Oil for over two years and I swear by it for removing makeup and leaving your skin clean, soft and pillowy, not tight or ‘squeaky’ clean. Then I hydrate with our Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum, you only need a few drops for the whole face. It’s lightweight but rehydrates your skin on a deeper level. How do you wind down after a busy day?
“This is an ongoing challenge for me as I find it hard to switch my brain off. My to-do list plays again and again in my head in a frustratingly unproductive way. Sometimes it’s tempting as a business owner to develop this martyr complex and just keep working. But over the years I’ve learnt that often leads to burn out and being a good leader is about setting boundaries and being an example for your team. So I’ve developed a few strategies for winding down and quietening my mind.


Firstly, straight after work and before dinner I try to move my body and get outside where possible. I need physical space away from my computer and phone. Even just changing out of work clothes and going for a walk around the block or stretching on the balcony for five minutes can help.

After a real shocker of a day, I get in the bath. I’m a huge believer that a long bath, a handful of our In Your Dreams Sleep Scrub and Soak and some meditation music can melt away most problems. I’m using the Calm App at the moment for meditation during the day and sleep stories at night or if I wake up and can’t get back to sleep. Matthew McConaughey reading Wonder is my go-to.

Also, all of the above come with a huge disclaimer that often I don’t practise the above because: life. It’s a constant juggle and no-one is perfect.”

How do you decorate your space to assist in falling asleep?

“Lighting and temperature are the biggest factors for me. Never underestimate the power of lighting. I keep the lights dimmed and use lamps rather than overhead lighting after dinner as a cue to my body that it’s time to power down.

Temperature wise I make sure I cool down or warm up the bedroom before bedtime. Other than that I invest in good linen and (try to) clean the sheets regularly. If I’m not sleeping well, I find refreshing my bedding is a good first step.”

What time do you go to sleep?

“It depends on the day I’ve had. We run a global business so often we have unavoidable meetings late at night and I need time to power down after those or my mind will be running wild all night. But ideally between 10.30-11pm.”

Do you plan the next day’s look the night before or in the morning? If so, what’s your go-to look for an easy morning the next day?

“Morning. I’m not that organised unfortunately. My go to look in summer is a colourful or patterned dress and cons. Winter is a long skirt, tight turtleneck, boots and coat. I always keep hair and makeup very natural.

I’ve got my morning face routine down to five minutes: frank body Charcoal Face Cleanser, Caffeinated Face Moisturiser and Brightening Eye Serum, a Vitamin C serum, sunscreen (everyday, even in winter) and basic makeup. Done. Simple, natural, glowy. My skincare is as important to me as my outfit.”

Can you describe your night time beauty routine?

How do you wind down after a busy day?

“I keep it simple: usually a warm shower, a body scrub and a good Netflix show. I also stretch, sometimes read, but sometimes I just binge watch shows. On workdays, I dedicate more effort to unwinding from screen time and non-stop meetings by meditating.”

How do you decorate your space to assist in falling asleep?

“I hate clutter, I can’t sleep if I know the house is a mess so I always try to go to sleep in a clean room and a clean, tidy house.”
