The barometer on which all celebrity couples should be measured is how complementary one another’s style is to their respective partner’s individual aesthetic. Like any relationship, this element requires hard work and devotion. Many can spend years trying to converge their personal tastes before realising their strength lies in their antithetical way of dressing. Others compliment their sartorial energy with great ease.
In the case of the new British It couple, Dua Lipa and Callum Turner, their sophomore public appearance proves they’re the latter. Less than a month into their transatlantic romance, the pair have cemented their burgeoning adoration by reeling through the early stages of celebrity coupledom. Being papped on the balcony of strip mall restaurant Sushi Park? Check. Slow dancing at the Beverly Hills Hotel at a party hosted by Steven Spielberg? Been there. Done that. Indeed, their latest outing proves the global pop supernova and emerging actor have already begun co-ordinating their ensembles, with Lipa adopting a more accessible silhouette to pair with Turner’s demure dandy silhouettes. For the occasion, Lipa eschewed her slinky, Y2K palate for a casual “jeans and a nice top” uniform. Both appeared fresh-faced and without a care in the world as they strolled through Los Angeles’ Larchmont Village.
In a far departure from both their respective red carpet approaches, the pair cut blasé figures in matching blue denim and white shirts. (Turner’s a long-sleeve polo-esque variety, Lipa’s a camisole trimmed with thick black hemming.) Lipa also remained a firm member of the celebrity style set with her trending Alaïa mesh ballet flats and Bottega Veneta large Gemilli bag.
Yes, the relegation of her label-heavy street-style wardrobe is an intriguing manoeuvre from the Argylle star. But it’s apparent Turner and Lipa have found their stride, and their place in pop culture. Watch this space.
