Ponytails might have become a stay-at-home staple over the last 18 months, but a slew of modern beauty icons have demonstrated that the humble pony can translate far beyond the couch with a little extra length. That’s right, hair pulled back into an XXL ponytail has proven to be a popular look amongst some of Hollywood’s most stylish stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and everyone’s dream girl, Zendaya.

The latter recently donned an extremely sleek iteration for a photo shoot. With a razor-sharp part running down the middle, Zendaya’s low ponytail was anchored at the nape of her neck, with her perfectly combed, flat-ironed (and extremely lengthy) locks cascading down her back for a modern take on the look.

Lopez, meanwhile, prefers a more classically glamorous version with a whole lot of volume. The star enlisted the help of her longtime hair stylist, Chris Appleton, to create a bodacious ponytail that had as much bulk and bounce as it did length. To be fair, J.Lo’s hairstyles have been at this height and volume for decades, so this is hardly a new trend she’s trying out – it’s a staple.

Kardashian’s look falls somewhere in the middle, with a tight half-up high ponytail with obscene levels of length. While also crafted by hair legend Appleton, this XXL ponytail look is characterized by a small pony pulled back from the front to sit at the very top of the crown, with the rest of the hair left loose.

It’s clear the XXL ponytail is popular right now, but not all of us are so blessed as to possess naturally super-long locks (or have the budget to blow on extensions, like celebrities do). But that’s no issue because as usual, TikTok has come to rescue with a handy hack for faking your way to a thicker, longer ponytail – no matter what your natural locks are like.

As shown by the account beautyhacks, all you need to do is double down on your ponytail. Simply create one ponytail with half your hair, concentrating it high on the top of your head (à la Kardashian).

Next simply take the rest of your hair and gather it into another ponytail a few inches beneath the first ponytail and secure it. Now allow your top ponytail to fall over the bottom one, camouflaging the elastics to fake the look of one super long ponytail.

Done!
