I’ve become exceptionally lazy about doing my hair during the COVID-19 pandemic. In lieu of motivation to pick up my curling wand, I’ve learned the value of TikTok styling hacks like heatless curls and the transformative powers of a chic hair accessory. But as more and more people get vaccinated and we ease back into so-called “normal” life, one of my goals is to finally start experimenting with new hairstyles again. One trend I’ve been meaning to try is grown-up pigtails, like those recently debuted by Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber.
As if answering my prayers, celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton recently shared an easy five-step tutorial via Instagram outlining how to bring the look to life, which he’s dubbed the “rope pony” technique. The pigtails are similar to his famous “snatched ponytail” because both styles are slicked back in the front, and ponytails sit atop the head to achieve serious face-lifting height (hello, cheekbones). This style will undoubtedly turn heads no matter the season, but it’s extra ideal for keeping hair off of your face and neck during the warmer months.
According to the hairstylist’s tutorial, the first (and hardest) step is to create super-sleek high pigtails. From there, it’s simple. Grab one of the two pigtails and split it into two sections. Then, “twist both ponytails in a clockwise direction” before winding each twist together in a counter-clockwise direction. Finish by tying hair with a clear elastic before repeating the technique on the other pigtail. In the rare case that you haven’t already, press play on the video below to see the steps in action.
