Cue the theme song — Only Murders in the Building is back! And Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin were all in attendance for the premiere of season 2 in Los Angeles on Monday. Both Short and Martin looked dapper in gray suits, while Gomez stole the show in a shimmering Michael Kors Collection gown. The floor-length design featured an asymmetrical sleeve with sequins all over.
Seeing the terrific trio all together again got us excited to revisit what Charles, Oliver and Mabel have been up to in the Arconia. (If none of that rang a bell, time to catch up on season 1!) The trio (Oliver played by Short, Charles played by Martin, and Mabel, played by Gomez) all live in the Upper West Side N.Y.C. building, the Arconia and bond over their love of true crime podcasts.
When the fire alarm is pulled in the building one evening, a neighbor and childhood friend of Mabel’s, Tim Kono, mysteriously dies. The trio suspect there was foul-play involved and want to get to the bottom of it by creating their own crime podcast. As the mystery unravels, we learned that their neighbor, Jan, who was seeing Charles, killed Tim Kono.
Jan and Tim had an affair before she murdered him out of jealousy when she discovered an emerald ring in his possession. The ring actually belonged to a family of black market jewelers in the building, the Dimas. Teddy Dimas (played by Nathan Lane) sponsors the podcast, but soon is looped into the drama himself. In a flashback scene from years earlier, we see his son, Theo Dimas, accidentally push Tim and Mabel’s friend Zoe off the roof in an attempt to get the emerald ring back that she stole, which Tim witnessed.
While he said nothing, his best friend Oscar was allegedly to blame and was sentenced to prison. The Dimas threaten Tim to keep quiet, while Tim gets the ring back in hopes of proving that the Dimas were behind Zoe’s death.
In the last scene of the season 1 finale, we watch the trio solve another crime when they realize Jan killed Tim. Jan gets arrested, the podcast is a hit, and they all celebrate on the roof — but it was too good to be true. Charles and Oliver get an alert to get out of the building while Mabel is grabbing another bottle of champagne. They rush down the stairs to find Mabel in her apartment covered in blood, hovering over a body wearing a tie-dye hoodie.
We can imagine that season 2 is going to start off with a bang, as there was another murder in the building and we can’t wait to watch. Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building is now streaming on Hulu.
