Olivia Rodrigo has made a career out of singing earnestly about love, heartbreak and growing up. But the Grammy-winning songstress has just taken her relatability to a new level by revealing an ex-related blunder that is truly the stuff of nightmares.

As a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 20-year-old spilled the reality of a years-long fan theory. Back in 2020, after it was confirmed her relationship with co-star Joshua Bassett had ended when he was seen getting close to Sabrina Carpenter, Rodrigo quickly followed and unfollowed Bassett on Instagram. Fans speculated at the time that it was an intentional message or that she had been hacked. But when chatting with host Fallon, she finally shed some light on the move, revealing the pitfalls of “stalking” online.

“I try to follow zero people because it helps me be off of my phone, you know, off of social media,” she explained, adding that this made her mistake “super obvious” to her followers.

“I had this very embarrassing encounter once where I was stalking my ex—as one does, sue me, sorry—and I accidentally followed him because I was stalking him,” she said, to our horror.

“I was just following one person, so it was super obvious that I was following him, and my friend ran into my room like, ‘Oh my God, did you mean to follow him?! Unfollow him!’” she said.

But the story took a turn for the worse.

“I went and grabbed my phone like, ‘Shit, oh my God’,” she went on. “I went to open the Instagram app, and the second that I opened the app, my phone died!”

“I couldn’t find a charger, so I was just following my ex for a while,” she added. “It was quite embarrassing.”

But alas, who amongst us hasn’t been there?

Scarred by the incident, Rodrigo created a ‘Finsta’ account for safer lurking practices and decided to lean into the rumours she was hacked.

Having met in 2019, the relationship allegedly inspired some of her most famous songs, including ‘Good 4 U, ‘Drivers License’ and ‘Traitor’ from her album, Sour.
