Ahhh, the Olsen twins – to many, the dual style gifts that keep on giving. Not only did they bless us with the elevated essentials line that is The Row, their off-duty style also provides an endless cache of sartorial splendor for us to mine. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been serving up effortlessly cool looks for decades, and for some reason what they wear never seems to date (even during that awkward boho phase that all millennial women regrettably wound up in circa 2005).
But one of their most photographed throwback style moments is undoubtedly the time they both attended the Autumn/Winter 2008 Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week. I can even remember where I was when those photos of the twins were first beamed around the world – a café that I promptly departed upon seeing the pictures, heading straight to sass & bide to snap up a pair of their infamous Black Rats tights similar to Ashley’s ruched leather iteration.
But it’s Mary-Kate’s iconic Chanel look from that 2008 show – cream floor-skimming coat, oversized round sunglasses, ankle boots and leggings – that we’re talking about today. Why? Well, because the pint-sized designer has been snapped wearing the same Chanel coat almost 13 years later.
This time she gave the tweed outerwear a more casual spin, teaming it with a shirt, tailored pants and her favourite Bottega Veneta sneakers. It’s a credit to her ability to transcend trends that both looks hold equal sartorial weight by today’s standards. We also love a sustainable queen that wears wardrobe classics for years on end.
So will we ever get over our Olsen obsession? Not likely, no.
