Margot Robbie has triumphantly said adieu to her career-defining project, Barbie, in the most cathartic way possible: a makeover. The transformational alteration preferred by those nursing a broken heart or celebrities trying to reinvent their brand image has long been regarded as the ultimate ritual to release former iterations of yourself into the past. So, like the titular character in the Greta Gerwig-director box office smash hit, Robbie has reentered the real world by eschewing the doll’s Malibu beach blonde locks for a strawberry hue colourway.

The multi-hyphenate producer and actor began untangling herself from the role she spent over a year embodying (both on screen and in the book-worthy Barbie press tour) with a suite of off-duty appropriate business-casual ensembles courtesy of Bottega Veneta. In denim jeans, oversized striped shirts and cinched-at-the-waist blazers, Robbie was entering a new style era far from the saccharine pink silhouettes she sported in every major city to promote the highest-grossing film of 2023. Now, her beauty looks have followed suit, too. (See pictures, here!)

The 33-year-old was spotted on set in Los Angeles with her hair styled half-up, half-down, with her blonde locks tinged a slight pink tone. (In Barbie’s defence, the hairstyle isn’t too dissimilar to the variation she wears in the movie’s climactic final scene where she emancipates her fellow Barbie and tells Ryan Gosling’s Ken he’s ‘Kenough’.) The pictures of Robbie’s new hairstyle were obtained while she was on set filming A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with The Banshees of Inisherin star Colin Farrell, so it’s not clear if the transformation is courtesy of the role, or symbolic of her wider beauty evolution.

Details regarding the upcoming fantasy romance have been kept under wraps, but it’s reported the film will entail “an imaginative tale of two strangers and the emotional journey that connects them”. As per Deadline, Robbie had “her pick of scripts to choose from following [Barbie’s] massive success,” and landed on the next project from South Korean-American director, Kogonada. Next on Robbie’s slate is a film adaption of The Sims and a Deadpool-style treatment of the comic book character Avengelyne, which Olivia Wilde is said to be directing. This Barbie might have traded her signature blonde colouring, but it’s clear she’s in full-on producer (and gin founder!) mode.
