If it’s still unfathomable to you that the two women who made a record-breaking, history-making, billion-dollar film were not nominated for an Academy Award, well, it is to us too. Barbie actress Margot Robbie and Barbie director Greta Gerwig were shockingly left out of their respective nomination categories at this year’s Oscars—but it hasn’t stopped the 33-year-old Australian star from shutting down the red carpet for the umpteenth time.

Robbie arrived at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood in a black, floor-length, strapless, sequinned gown from Versace’s Fall/Winter 2024 runway on February 23. Far removed from the pink closet she wardrobed across the Barbie tour last year and this awards season, Robbie was beaming as she smiled and waved for the plethora of fans screaming her name. The most talked about film of the year, Robbie’s performance as Barbie and the passion in which she delivered it helped galvanise women across the globe, all rallying against the most impossible standards they are asked to live up to.

While the film is recognised for eight nominations including Best Picture, the decision to leave the masterminds behind it out of the Best Actress and Best Director category was one met with furore. Co-star Ryan Gosling, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, released a statement on the obvious snubs.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he began.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius,” he added. “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.”

Barbie will go up against Oppenheimer, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, American Fiction, The Holdovers, Poor Things, Anatomy Of A Fall and The Zone Of Interest in the Best Picture category.
