There are three universal truths about Harry Styles: the musician is the closest thing we have to a real-life Adonis, he has four nipples, and if anything were to happen to his signature long curly hair, his fans would have a conniption.
If new reports are to be believed, the latter has occurred, with the Harry’s House singer eschewing his trademark floppy locks for a brazen buzzcut. Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times.
A blurry image of what is assumed to be the 29-year-old has gone viral after circulating on social media. (You can see the picture for yourself here). Given the low quality of the image, it’s hard to make out exactly what we’re looking at, but it appears that Styles is sporting a shaved head à la Kim Kardashian on her front cover for CR Fashion Book.
Anonymous gossip monger DeuxMoi is alleged to be the source of the rumour, with the incognito Instagram account releasing the news to their followers via an exclusive text thread. However, given the ferocity of Styles’ fans, the images quickly made their way onto the web, sending fans into a meltdown. DeuxMoi has since doubled down on the claim, asserting that the image of Styles with a buzz cut is factual and taken at a recent U2 concert at Las Vegas’ new concert venue, The Sphere.
So far, no paparazzi house has taken images of Styles with the buzzy look, but we can bet there is a literal high bounty placed on his head to capture the shot. Not since Styles entered the public arena as a then-16-year-old boy band member have we seen him without his grown-out mane. Even after cutting his hair upon One Direction’s “indefinite hiatus” and the beginning of his solo career, the multi-hyphenated star has always used his hair as a tool to shape his image.
So, what prompted this bold change? Was Styles, like the rest of us, enamoured by David Beckham’s rebellious decision to shave his head in 2000?
Styles fans have a different theory. They believe a lyric from the second verse of Taylor Swift’s from the vault single “Now That We Don’t Talk” off 1989 (Taylor’s Version) could’ve prompted the cut.
The lyrics read: “You grew your hair long / You got new icons / And from the outside / It looks like you’re tryin’ lives on / I miss the old ways / You didn’t have to change.”
The timing of Swift’s release and Styles’ hair change coinciding with one other has prompted fans to theorise that Styles shaved his head after Swift sang how she wasn’t fond of an ex-lover who grew his hair out after their breakup.
It’s entertaining to indulge in groundless speculations, but we here in the GRAZIA office are demanding to know if Styles has thrown us all an end-of-year curveball and gotten a buzzcut. This wasn’t on our 2023 bingo card.
