You undoubtedly have heard the name Charlotte Knowles before whether it was scrolling on Instagram or making headlines for celeb street style. Since 2018, the eponymous label, named after its founder, has been all over, worn by everyone from The Crown’s Emma Corrin to Beyonce, Dua Lipa, and Bella Hadid. In April, the brand underwent a creative rebirth and debuted its Fall/Winter 2021 collection as KNWLS.
While the name, logo, and general direction have been updated to reflect the founder Charlotte Knowles’ vision for the brand’s future, she’s still giving us all the sultry looks that have become signature to her label. For her latest and second collection, the Central Saint Martins alum debuted her Spring/Summer 2022 collection in an industrial parking garage on Oxford Street. The venue of choice served perfectly for a collection that brought London grit and edginess centerstage. Knowles gave us a fresh aesthetic while still holding to her brand ethos that we’re very much in love with.
The KNWLS girl left London’s Chelsea neighborhood behind and made her way to East London’s Shoreditch (at least for SS22). Bourgeois no more, you can’t help but notice the grunge cool-girl patterns and darkened hues as models walked in the brand’s perfectly done corsetry and bodycon silhouettes. There’s no question that the noughties were back on the KNWLS runway, and we can’t wait to see it on the streets by its cult A-list fans.
Knowles is a part of the new generation of designers who champion what modern women look for when dressing. The list also includes LaQuan Smith, Rui Zhou, Casey Cadwallader, and fellow London-based designer Nensi Dojaka — all put their own touch on the conventional notions of sexiness in a timeless and attractive way that outlines the feminine form.
