On Sunday, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the 78th annual Golden Globe award ceremony for the fourth time from the Rainbow Room at 30 Rock in New York City and the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, respectively. And, well, there is something to be said about seeing people in their chosen environments, right? Not unlike the way we are curious about the surroundings behind our colleagues and therapists and friends on Zoom, our major takeaway from the Zoom-era 2021 Golden Globes was that it really is all about the backgrounds.
“The technology is so great, you are never going to be able to tell the difference, it’s going to be smooth sailing,” Poehler said, pretending to stroke her friend’s hair through the screen. While we could tell the difference (there was an audible pause before Daniel Kaluuya accepted his award Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah), it felt more personal to see celebrities all dressed up and appearing on national television from wherever they deemed fit. Let’s recap some of the more memorable backdrops (or lack thereof), shall we?

Firstly, there was The Watchmen’s Yahya Abdul Mateen II who presented from what appeared to be his bed (which, mood). There was Nomadland actress Frances McDormand who would not turn her camera on when her category was announced (again, mood). Regina King in custom Louis Vuitton gave us the first dog sighting of the night with Cornbread nestled in bed behind her. Speaking of dogs! Glenn Close’s pooch stared lovingly up at her from the ground behind her and let us not forget Jodie Foster and her wife in pajamas kissing their pup.

Andra Day accepted her Golden Globe for Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday surrounded by her supportive family. Aaron Sorkin’s kitchen made an interesting debut when he accepted the Best Screenplay award for The Trial of the Chicago 7. Cynthia Nixon made a funny and inserted the meme of Bernie Sanders at the inauguration with her. Sandra Oh was inexplicably photobombed by sledding dinosaurs? “Finding someone you wanna spend your life with is as likely as seeing dinosaurs in the desert,” the Killing Eve star deadpanned. And, finally, on a sweeter note, the director of Minari shared a hug with his daughter after winning Best Foreign Language film.
And really, aren’t we just waking up, getting (somewhat) dressed and sitting in front of our computers wherever the WiFi is best — give or take a few stray blow up dinosaurs?
