It has been just over one year since Emma Roberts welcomed her first child Rhodes and the actress is ready to get back on set. This week Deadline announced that one of her first roles since returning to the silver screen will be in the Sony-Marvel film Madame Web which is currently in pre-production. The actress joins Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in the comic book film although little is known about their roles.

For the unacquainted, the character Madame Web (who will be portrayed by Johnson) is depicted as an elderly woman within the comic book series who possesses psychic abilities and feeds off spiderweb that acts as her life support. Due to her age she never fought in battle, although sources for the aforementioned publication are hinting the film could take an unexpected turn.

As this time it is unknown who Roberts and Sweeney will play while the cast also reportedly stars Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced and Tahar Rahim. It will be directed by S.J. Clarkson with screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Disney has the rights to the majority of Marvel films while Sony hold the rights for Spider-Man and Venom, making this the first female superhero in the company’s own MCU.

The film is scheduled to release in theaters on July 7, 2023.

Roberts comes off the back of her new rom-com Maybe I Do alongside Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Richard Gere which will see a release later this year. She’s also no stranger to more dark film genres and often appears in American Horror Story and starred in horror-teen drama, Scream Queens.

The news comes after the 31-year-old recently split with Garrett Hedlund after three years and the birth of their son.
