It’s well known that Christian Dior had an affinity for gardening and for flowers. To this day the French fashion house heroes his love for flora through beautiful printed garments, skincare and perfume; often the main ingredient is source directly from the Dior rose garden. This season his legacy is highlighted through fine china with the release of a new Dior Maison collection, La Colle Noire.
“He loved the simplicity and beauty of flowers which he picked himself in his garden, which adorned his creations throughout his life as a couturier,” artistic director Cordelia de Castellane explains. “I believe he likes to arrange his bouquets in the kitchen… He was completely fascinated by perennial flowers and bulb flowers.”
La Colle Noire was the name of the chateau the couturier once owned in the South of France with delicate sketches of lilacs, lilies of the valley, roses, carnations, tulips and papavers echoing the flowers still found in his vibrant garden today. The flourishing moments of art are then emblazoned onto dessert plates, mouth-blown glass decanters, hand-painted glasses, napkins, and embroidered placemats.
More pared-back than past collections, color is only found on the rims of plates and subtly drawn around the lip of each waterglass; each named after a different flower in French. Two Carafes lend a little more vibrancy while candlesticks use more pastel-colored glass.
