There’s more to yoga than peace and mindfulness—it’s also an excellent way to tone and flex your body. Beyond the stretches and inner calm, it’s quite the secret weapon for strengthening your core and carving out that coveted flat belly

Ready to engage those abs? Here are three core power yoga poses that can really zero in on that abdominal work.

Bhujangasana: The Cobra Pose

This pose is fantastic for fortifying your upper abs. Here’s how you do it:

  • Start by lying face-down, your gaze to the floor.
  • Place your hands beneath your shoulders, fingers spread out.
  • Inhale and lift your chest, engaging your core.
  • Keep your head up and look straight ahead.
  • Exhale and lower back down to your starting position.

Navasana: The Boat Pose

This exercise does wonders for toning the entire abdominal area. To get into boat pose:

  • Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you.
  • Place your hands slightly behind your hips, fingers apart.
  • Inhale and lift your legs, arms, and torso, engaging your core to find balance.
  • Hold your head straight and maintain a straight line through your body.
  • Exhale and slowly return to your starting position.

Pawanmuktasana: The Wind Relieving Pose

This pose is especially effective for easing bloating and enhancing digestion. Here’s how to perform it:

  • Start by lying on your back, legs extended, arms by your sides.
  • Inhale and bend your knees, drawing your feet towards your hips.
  • Grab your knees with your hands and gently pull them in towards you, activating your abdominals.
  • Keep your head straight and your back flush with the floor. Exhale and return to the starting position.

For the best results, these poses should be practiced regularly, at least three times a week. You can also incorporate them with breathing exercises and meditation for an optimal outcome.

Tips for an Effective Practice:

  • Start with a short session of 10 to 15 minutes and gradually increase the duration as you improve.
  • If you’re new to yoga, focus on perfecting the form before increasing intensity.
  • Listen to your body and don’t push through pain.
