WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle Griner have arrived. The couple attended their very first Met Gala in custom Calvin Klein.

While Brittney adorned a taupe suit set from the brand in a satin suit jacket over a matching sheer mesh top and matching trousers, Cherelle opted for an ivory strapless column gown. The Phoenix Mercury player said on the red carpet, the designs are “dripping off of us right now.”

The athlete went on to speak on the exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” honoring the late, great designer. “When you think of fashion you cannot not think of him,” she said.

Brittney was wrongfully detained in Russia for allegedly having under a gram of medically prescribed vape cartridges containing hash oil from February 2022 until her release in a prisoner swap in December 2022. She was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison on drug smuggling charges before the Biden administration negotiated her release.

On Saturday, the couple attended the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Griner and President Joe Biden finally met face-to-face for the first time in Washington, D.C. The Griners were invited as guests of CBS and Gayle King for the occasion, wearing Calvin Klein, with Brittney in a black suit and a sheer black top and Cherelle in a strapless black gown.

King shared an emotional video to Instagram to commemorate the milestone. “It was amazing,” said the two-time Olympic gold medalist of her meeting with the President. “It was emotional. That’s for sure. I’ll say that. It was emotional for both of us. It was especially for me.” When King asked the basketball star what stood out in their meeting, she said, “He kept saying how big of a fan he was of mine and how much he loved the way I played basketball,” she said, which she thought was “pretty cool.”

Cherelle described the meeting as a “full-circle moment to finally meet with him – not by myself, but with BG as well, was just amazing.” During Brittney’s 10-month detainment, Cherelle never stopped advocating for her wife’s release.

The couple posted a shared a carousel of photos on Instagram, leading with a selfie with the President and the First Lady, writing, “We are in awe from The White House Correspondents’ Association’s dinner last night. The first amendment is so important and we’re grateful to live in a country that recognizes freedom of speech.”

The Griners continued, “Major thank you to the courageous journalist from our past, present, and future for truth-telling and being the foundation for radical change. Our prayers go out to the families of Evan Gershkovich (Russia) and Austin Tice (Syria) —  reporting is not a crime and we must bring them home.”
