Despite fashion’s current propensity towards Y2K-esque, poker-straight hair, big, bouncy curls remain ever popular. From undone waves to bodacious barrels, it seems most of us are still obsessed with adding a little body and movement to our hair by way of a few waves or bends.

But all that styling – with a curling wand, a straightener or even those nostalgic hair rollers that have seen a resurgence in recent years – means exposing your hair to a whole lot of heat, which tends to take its toll on your tresses.

Enter the heatless hair revolution, which has been gathering momentum on TikTok in recent years. From hair ‘plopping’ to hairstylist Chris Appleton‘s plait-clamping trick for easy waves, the platform is full of ideas for getting polished locks with less heat than traditional methods.

The most popular hair styling trick of late pertains to heatless curls, which creators swear can be achieved overnight sans-heat styler. The heatless styling technique involves wrapping the lengths of your hair away from your face and around a cushy curling ribbon while wet, leaving it in overnight and then waking up to voluminous curls.

Creator @kayli.boyle demonstrated the mindblowing results in a TikTok video that bears the trending hashtag #heatlesscurls, which has now had more than 792 million views. Another creator @lillyvanbrooklyn posted a similar experience, captioning the video, “They literally look like my roller curls I’m shook.”

TikTok creator @gillianxgrace posted a tutorial for the technique, saying that it took her “less than 10 minutes” to wrap both sides of her hair. While most use a dedicated curling ribbon, which can be picked up for an impressively affordable price, you can also try the same heatless curls technique by wrapping your hair around a bathrobe or even a sock.
