In March 2020, the UAE government closed all supermarkets and shopping malls as a preventative measure to curb the spread of COVID-19 alongside the nationwide sterilisation drive.
As Ramadan approaches and is said to begin on 23 April 2020, the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management and the Dubai Economic Department of Development has announced that aside from the limited supermarkets which are currently open, they will be reopening a few shops that sell fish and meats, nuts and sweets, coffee and tea, baking supplies and fruit and vegetables between 8am and 8pm.

The recent decision had been made to provide the residents and citizens with access to fresh food and produce in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.
To ensure that all reopened stores are complying with the sanitation guidelines and that the shoppers are practicing social distancing and carrying the required permits, Dubai Economy will continue to inspect the stores during this period for the safety and wellbeing of all residents and citizens countrywide.
