The year 2022 was the year when the world slowly found its way back to healing. The MET Gala, Oscars, and more events were all back in full swing. The entertainment world was a buzz with drama every other week. We also saw one of the biggest celebrity defamation trials broadcast live, and the comeback of Y2K fashion in its evolved form. Subsequently, meme culture hit its highest peak with the sudden influx of content. Now with only a few days to close off the year, let’s look back on the most iconic pop culture moments of 2022.

Rihanna’s Pregnancy

The universe was taken aback but rejoiced when superstar Rihanna dropped this bomb instead of her much-anticipated album. “An expecting Rihanna is the best way to start the year 2022,” said fans collectively. But Rihanna did not stop there, as she continued to break the internet with bold maternal looks in the following months. Once again, the internet was awed when she revealed the face of her adorable baby boy with A$AP Rocky on TikTok out of the blue.

The Slap

Echoed all around the world, this single slap made the world come to a standstill. Was it a stunt? An inside joke? Sadly no, that was really Will Smith falling from his former glory. This incident took place during the 94th Academy Awards last march. As one of the award presenters, American comedian Chris Rock made a subtle passing joke about Jada Smith being bald and comparing her to G.I Jane in his speech. Smith abruptly stood up, walked to the stage, and slapped the said presenter. Once he got back to his seat, he yelled “keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.” The internet collectively dissected the entire ordeal to end up with no conclusion other than grabbing the new catchphrase and going berserk with it.

Louis Theroux’s Rap

My money don’t jiggle jiggle, it folds 💯💰 #louistheroux #ameliadimoldenberg #chickenshopdate #autotune #remix #fyp

Even if you think you don’t know what this is, you do. Everyone and their mothers were jamming to the multiple remixes and doing the dance challenges all year. It all happened during an interview on the YouTube series Chicken Shop Date. The interviewer jokingly asked Louis Theroux to rap the song he wrote in his 2000 document series, Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends. The weirdly addictive rap went viral once Manchester-based producers Duke and Jones got their hands on it. Legend says you can hear the rap when you close your eyes.

Depp Vs Heard Trial

The whole world sat down with Twitter in one hand and popcorn in another to watch Captain Jack Sparrow take on his biggest nemesis yet, his ex-wife Amber Heard. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard had split in 2016 after which Heard filed a divorce due to domestic abuse. The case took a turn when Heard wrote an Op-Ed in The Washington Post two years later alluding to Johnny Depp’s abuses. Heard wrote, “two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”  To which Johnny responded by suing Heard for defamation. The six-week-long trial was broadcasted live and quickly became a hot topic.

Bennifer 2.0

After 19 years, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finally tied the knot. In 2022, they found each other again after breaking off their initial engagement in 2003. Both actors are no strangers to romcoms but who could have guessed that their love story would be the most romantic of them all?

Pete Davidson and Kim Kadarshian

Pete Davidson was once again the talk of the internet when he confirmed his relationship with Kim Kardashian. Insiders say that sparks flew when they kissed for a Saturday Night Live sketch when Kim hosted. The couple made multiple appearances on red carpets as the renowned MET Gala in march. This love story, however, was cut short in August. The Kim K phase seems over for Pete as of now, and the next on the list seems to be Emily Ratajkowski.

Kim Kardashian in Marilyn Monroe’s Dress

In 1962, Marilyn Monroe, donned a sheer, shimmery dress, and seductively sang ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ to celebrate President John F Kennedy. Years later, it is still considered an iconic pop culture moment in Hollywood. This stunning vintage gown was so memorable that it became a priceless historical fashion item. Kim Kadarshian’s interpretation of this year’s MET Gala theme, ‘Gilded Glamour,’ was to squeeze into this very same piece of history, leaving many stunned.

The Try Guys Scandal

We all watched The Try Guys break away from Buzzfeed to flourish into something of their own. The concept of The Try Guys belongs to the four friends, Keith Habersberger, Ned Fulmer, Zach Kornfeld, and Eugene Lee Yang, where they try anything for entertainment value. But Ned shockingly took it too far by committing adultery with his employee. It was heartbreaking for the long-time fans since his entire personality was on being a good husband to his lovely wife. The remaining try guys courteously explained the situation to their fans.

Emma D’Arcy’s Negroni Sbagliato

The #SpitGate

Everyone’s heartthrob Harry Styles was one of the stars of Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling. Between the breakup, Wilde’s gaslighting and Florence Pugh ditching the press conference, there is just too much to get into. However, during the Don’t Worry Darling premiere, a short clip of Harry Styles spitting at Chris Pine was what drove the internet into an absolute frenzy. Don’t worry darling, it was debunked.

Heidi Klum as a Worm

It has already been established that Heidi Klum is the Queen of Halloween, and the model did not fail to come through this year as well. Klum wriggled into her annual Halloween Party’s red carpet in a worm costume that led the Internet into a haywire. The next level costume took four months to create and 12 hours for her to put it on. It inspired the meme “Would You Still Love Me If I Was A Worm” that took social media by storm.
