American TV host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey visited the city of Petra in Jordan this week alongside her close friend, American TV personality Gayle King. Known as the Rose City, the historical and archaeological city is known as one of the world’s most famous sites where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. It is also considered as one of the oldest cities in the world, believed to have been established in 312 BC by the ancient tribe of Nabateans.

A distinctive feature of the site is the way it is half-built and half-carved into the rock, surrounded by mountains with numerous passages and valleys. Jordan’s most visited tourist attraction is known by many names such as Rose City due to the colour of the rock, and Lost City since it was uninhabited for five centuries until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812. So it is no surprise that Oprah urged her followers on her Instagram to visit Petra which is voted as one of the seven new wonders of the world by UNESCO.

The friends also visited the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan. Believed to be the site where John the Baptist baptised Jesus of Nazareth, the site is pristinely filled with Roman and Byzantine ruins. It has two principle world heritage archaeological sites, including Jabal Mar-Elias, the remnants of a monastery and an area where remains of churches, caves and a pool are found.

Oprah and Gayle were seen wearing the traditional Middle Eastern ensemble called a farwa to keep themselves warm from Jordan’s cold winter.

In what seems to be a short yet sweet trip, a series of photographs were shared showing Oprah Winfrey’s Jordan experience where she is seen riding a camel in front of the historical site and taking in the red sands of the Jordanian desert alongside her long-time friend Gayle.

Gayle also shared photographs which she took from the streets of Amman, Jordan.

Oprah and Gayle have been friends for 46 years, having met at Baltimore’s WJZ radio station in the 1970s. Despite their incredible careers, the best friends are still as close as they were in their early 20s as seen on their recent trip to Jordan.
