Mary-Kate Olsen, along with her twin sister Ashley, are pioneers of the quiet luxury movement. Their brand, The Row, where you can buy a cashmere coat for no less than $20,000, has gained cult status amongst fashion enthusiasts and A-list celebrities for its quality make and nondescript designs. But it’s what the former actress actually wears herself that really gets our attention.

Once a constant street style favourite in the early 2000s, the Olsen twins tend to avoid being snapped altogether in 2023. We are privy to the odd paparazzi shot, though, where we can size up their looks as they step out of their New York offices for a quick smoke break.

Usually clad in her own label, chic equivalents or vintage designer brands, the twin rarely strays from her signature looks. But with one innocent trip to Mexico, Olsen had the internet in a tizzy over her vacation style.

Photographed in a distressed oversized t-shirt with an unrecognisable print and baggy black trousers, she was relatively incognito as she arrived at the airport. As keen fans were quick to point out, the look is somewhat reminiscent of a bygone era in the designer’s style evolution—particularly, when she was a humble student attending New York University in her harem pants and beat-up Kelly bag.

Her accessorising was what really brought back some memories, as she wrapped herself up in a large scarf and carried a large, slouchy bag while wearing opaque, oversized sunglasses. Ahh, just like the old days.

But if there’s any takeaway from Olsen’s latest look, it’s that even the most serious of fashion designers don’t take personal style too seriously.
