We’re not typically privy to what’s in other people’s online shopping carts, so we conclude the most popular fashion trends by noting the reoccurring styles we see on and off the runway. As effective as this method is, it’s still unclear which products are selling the best across different e-tailer platforms. However, Afterpay does have access to that customer information. By analysing its user data, the third-party purchasing company has drawn definitive conclusions about the most-shopped styles and fashion items for spring/summer 2022. Ahead are the most-wanted items in fashion this year, according to Afterpay’s Spring Summer 2022 Global Trend Report.

the new Office Dress Code

Working from home for an extended period shifted the way that we dress for the office today. According to the data gathered by Afterpay, we’re returning to work wearing comfier styles that harken back to the relaxed workwear popularised during the WFH days. This hybrid between office casual and cosy consists of loose pants and neutral sneakers, like the retro beige Nike New Balances. We’re wearing wider, looser fits that are elevated with visual complex textiles, like plisse. Items made from plisse fabric have gone up in purchasing power by +14% over the last year. It’s an effortless way to spice up an outfit without sacrificing comfortability.

Wedding season is on and after two years of not being able to celebrate properly, people are ready to go all-out. According to Afterpay’s user data, midi dresses are up by +45% and maxi dresses are up to the tune of +56% from last year. The most-wanted styles for these semi-formal dresses are tight silhouettes, cut-outs, and lacy fabrics. These bold designs reveal our desire to go out, show out, and be seen while celebrating our loved one’s milestones.

The return of ’60s and ’70s Psychedelia

Fashion signatures from the ’60s and ’70s have been on the rise in the mainstream, with items like structured vests, halter tops, psychedelic inspired prints and extreme cut-outs dominating our fashion feeds. According to Afterpay, floral prints are one of the biggest ’60s and ’70s trends to reemerge this year, with quarterly sales up +26%. The most-wanted floral print styles are those rendered in crochet tops, matching sets, and abstract printed dresses. Clogs, like Prada’s logo clog or Magda Butrym’s crochet clog mules, have also seen an uptick in sales, in addition to wide-leg denim. This fashion style evokes the feeling of freedom and high-spiritedness associated with these time periods and its popularity suggests that is the mood for spring/summer 2022.
