Dozens of wildfires have erupted across southern and western Turkey, with roughly ten people perished by the violent blazes.
For the past week, villages and resorts along the Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines have been overpowered by wildfire, high winds and scorching temperatures, driving the fires, pressing residence and tourists to evacuate by land or sea.
The blazes have reached their sixth day of raging wildfires, leading European Union and neighbouring countries to send planes to bring the blazes down. Between Italy fighting wildfires in Sicily to Greece battling fires in the west of the country, it feels like neither of the countries is facing the wildfires that have swept along Turkey’s southern coast. A dome of high pressure above the region has driven the high temperatures and trapped the heat – even though Turkish authorities have brought down more than 100 fires, new ones continue to break out.
Many Turkish celebrates have been sharing an outpour of posts, raising awareness regarding the fires and encourage people to help. Turkish celebrities are reposting similar messages with the hope to encourage countries to support them during these trying times. Actress Hande Erçel took to her Instagram sharing, “HELP!!!! 🚨I am calling all the countries who can help us. We are perished and devastated with the total 112 fires. The ones that we can’t stop are still going so strong. We dont have enough fire fighting planes to stop it. We lost 8 people, so many animals and our forests. Please help us!!!!! We need planes urgently. We only have 1 world. #helpTurkey”
There are a few different ways you can help Turkey in its time of need. If you’re living in the coastal Mediterranean country but haven’t been affected by the fires, providing food to those who need it and dropping off water, supplies or serving food can help many without shelter. If you live outside of the country, supporting Turkish funds that are set up and donating whatever you can is an alternative solution. Your donations can go toward nonprofit organizations providing food, water and shelters to those in need – the smallest amount goes a long way and can truly help.
